I wonder where those left hand prop blades ended up.
Re: PAL Broken Landing Gear in Halifax
Must have been an unexpected gear collapse since the #1 engine was running at the time.

Re: PAL Broken Landing Gear in Halifax
"Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick said the plane experienced a "suspected landing gear issue" after arrival Saturday night. The aircraft was unable to reach the terminal and the crew and 73 passengers were off-loaded by bus".
The aircraft was unable to reach the terminal. Hey Air Canada thanks for pointing that out I never would have guessed that would happen if the landing gear totally collapses on roll out
BTW you forgot to pass on that the good news was that deplaning was facilitate by the fact that the main cabin door was close to the ground

Re: PAL Broken Landing Gear in Halifax
Bit more exciting than a minor gear issue.
Passengers say plane filled with smoke after fiery landing in Halifax
'We started seeing fire on the left side of the plane and smoke started coming in the windows,' says passenger.
Passenger Nikki Valentine, who spoke with CBC from a hangar where many of those aboard the flight were taken, said there appeared to be a problem with one of the plane's tires upon landing.
"The plane started to sit at about a 20-degree angle to the left and, as that happened, we heard a pretty loud — what almost sounded like a crash sound — as the wing of the plane started to skid along the pavement, along with what I presume was the engine," she said.
Valentine said the plane then skidded down the runway for a "decent" distance as the pilots worked to stop the plane.
"The plane shook quite a bit and we started seeing fire on the left side of the plane and smoke started coming in the windows," she said.
Fellow passenger Aden O'Callaghan said the cabin was filled with smoke by the time he exited the plane.
In an interview Sunday, he said you could hear the fear in flight attendants voices as they directed passengers — some of whom were screaming and crying.
He said it "took a shocking amount of time" to evacuate as some passengers attempted to gather their belongings.
"I started yelling. I was like everybody, like, 'F your belongings. Get the hell off, everybody needs to be safe,'" he said.

I think they need to start criminally charging people with reckless endangerment if someone evacuates with their belongings, the passenger safety briefing would include the words, in an evacuation, if you grab your carryon baggage, you WILL be charged with….rookiepilot wrote: ↑Sun Dec 29, 2024 2:21 pm Bit more exciting than a minor gear issue.

People are selfish and I would be right along side Pelmet pushing people out of my way if they try to get their bags!

Air Canada PR is hilarious. "Hard landing" a couple years ago. Now a "minor landing gear issue", that everyone else would call a complete failure of the left MLG. Call it what it is, the left main gear failed. Done.

Re: PAL Broken Landing Gear in Halifax
looking at weather, winds seemed ok. was this a maintenance issue or a crew one? ie: was there a brace call, talk or test

Air Canada did not refer to it as a "minor" landing gear issue. That was a previous poster on this forum.
The AC statement referred to a "suspected landing gear issue".
Which, prior to a proper technical investigation by, y'know, people trained for that sort of thing, to determine WHY the left gear collapsed, is the correct terminology. Both legally and logically.
Not that anyone cares about facts anymore, this is the internet in 2024 after all, chock full of smarmy armchair experts. Just thought it worth pointing out.

From one of the photos, it looks like the left nose gear wheel is no longer there.

That's rich, alluding to an AC statement on an incident as a factual and complete description of what occurred.complexintentions wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 3:06 am

Vas posted the ATC audio on YouTube, sounds like a normal approach and landing until the collapse.

The video looks like they're on a rocket re-entering the atmosphere. Quite the fire.

I too would suspect a landing gear issue.

Re: PAL Broken Landing Gear in Halifax
From TSB.....
C-GPNA, a De Havilland DHC-8-402 aircraft operated by PAL Airlines, was operating as PVL2259
from St. John's International Airport (CYYT), NL, to Halifax Stanfield International Airport (CYHZ),
NS. During the takeoff from CYYT, the number 1 main wheel tire (left outboard tire) failed, leaving
tire portions on the runway. Neither the blown tire condition, nor the tire debris on the runway at
CYYT was noticed during the flight, and the aircraft continued to destination. Following touchdown
on Runway 23 at CYHZ the blown tire imbalance led to a vibration that caused the left main
landing gear stabilizer brace to become unlocked and allow the left main landing gear to collapse.
As the landing gear collapsed, the left propeller contacted the runway surface. There was a left
engine fire, and the crew activated the engine extinguisher system. The aircraft came to rest on the
runway and 73 passengers and 4 crew members evacuated with no reported injuries. The TSB is
investigating.

Ah...no. I was referring to how someone accused AC or saying something they didn't. I pointed out what was factually said. And advocated to wait for an official report from actual trained accident investigators. Except its not a factually complete statement of the entire occurrence. Namely, they omitted mention of the fire and smoke in the cabin.complexintentions wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 11:07 amAh...no. Omissions of facts are lies in my book. I don't know how you do it.
Also suspected = media code for minor.
Everyone gets the PR but you. Why do you defend this kind of corporate PR BS?
Thats what I am curious about.
Re: PAL Broken Landing Gear in Halifax
Sounds like a seemingly identical scenario to the Jazz accident in YYC/YEG in 2014. Different tire (back then the report focused on reasons for the #3 tire failure), but I wonder does anyone know if PAL uses retreaded MLG tires?

Funny AC neglected to mention any fire in their description of the event. Must be a fake video then.co-joe wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 10:03 am The video looks like they're on a rocket re-entering the atmosphere. Quite the fire.

First of all, the video would not have been available when the press release was made.rookiepilot wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 12:49 pmFunny AC neglected to mention any fire in their description of the event. Second, you don’t know what he was told about the event, he may very well have been told they had a gear issue and were not able to get to the gate.
But why is anyone surprised, companies pay people to spin anything negative into the least negative information possible.

Right. “Aircraft couldn’t make it to the gate — passengers were bussed to the terminal”?
Seriously?

Why would they update their press release, the media did it for them so you can sit here and bitch about how they “lied”
I just don’t see why you’re so bent out of shape over this, media spin is an entire business, PR firms who specialize in this get the most most and some companies have their own personnel for this purpose, it’s everywhere not limited to AC.

Well this is the same Air Canada PR machine that called the A320 CFIT in Halifax a "hard landing"
