The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no

After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

started at 22, worked full time and flew weekends and evenings for 3 years until I got my comm/multi/ifr/seaplane rating. Still not rich , but certainly enjoying the ride and all the neat places and people I've met on the adventure.

1974 Private age 18
1975 Commercial age 19
1976 Multi IFR age 20

Most of my companies went out of business too. (or got bought out)

Central Aeroflight
Saint Air (Little Grand Rapids)
Norcanair
Aerotrades
Flying Fireman
Air Spray (still in operation)
Air West
Canadian Partner
Canadian Airlines
Air Canada (almost went out of business)

Way back then, night flying was so dangerous we had to file an actual flight plan for every night flight. (no flight itinerary or flight note allowed) Even in the circuit.

We flew VFR at even/odd altitudes just like IFR traffic. It was a bitch if you flew to the USA because you would have to climb 500' instantly to stay legal.

Can anyone else remember some silly rules that got changed over time?

18. It was in '72 and I had a good summer job (driving a gravel truck) so I could afford the $700 that the ppl cost.
I went to Con College for the CPL and graduated in '79. ( CLGUY was in my class).

Went to work at 19 as crewman on the Otter on floats. $200/month and 1 cent a mile. Then got promoted to crewman on the Canso at 1 1/2 cents a mile. Wheeeee!!! :D
That was in 1965. Began flight instruction during freeze-up, and finished off the CPL during break-up the next spring. The rest, as they say, is history. :D
