Kananaskis interception

Post by Airbrake »

As we flew in to YYC today we heard 1 plane get intercepted by F18’s and 1 get warned away.

Don’t want to be the one who was intercepted.

Read your NOTAMS.

Not trying to defend people unaware of the G7 summit, but the missed Notam was the 27th of 37 Notams listed on NavCanada’s CFPS (for YYC-YBA flight, as an example). May be time for some NOTAM hierarchy?

Totally disagree. NOTAMS are issued for specific things that can seriously affect any flight that it impacts. And have totally zero impact on all other flights. There is no way to determine beforehand how severe the results could be for any flight that is in contravention. It’s a pilot’s job to check them and see if, and how, any affect their intended flight.

Also, in general, it’s never a good idea to over-react to a single incident.

You can absolutely revamp the system to be more useful.
Don't show airspace closures in Ukraine or Russia when you're planning a domestic Canadian flight. Don't list burnt out lightbulbs on towers if you're not a helicopter. Nobody cares about birds on the runway that was notam'd weeks ago and pops up every summer. Don't care about a crane half a mile from the runway.

Agreed, but things like this have been predicted by many pilots. And it will only happen more frequently.

This website is worth a read: https://fixingnotams.org/reel-of-telegrams/
With a bit of humor at times, it does explain the issue quite well.

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

We also need graphical NOTAMs. Yeah, we have trigger NOTAMs, but can it please have a link?

Some 3rd party platforms actually do graphical representations of NOTAMs such as this. Not sure why NavCanada can't.

"Area bound by _____. Link to map" Nope, too advanced for 2025.

...and don't forget to review the AICs. A glorious 8 pager with colour graphics/maps and generous descriptions was published in mid May about the airspace changes.
