ANR headset for 737 NG/Max
Good evening,
I already did the search for ANR headset on here and found three threads and read them all. None mention the new one from Bose - the A30. Looking for most current info on any option. Either in ear or on ear fine with me. Looking for true ANR since I have the hearing of a canine (and would like to keep it). $$$ not a limiting factor for that reason.
Factors for me in order are
Noise reduction - plus what happens if battery runs out-ie will it still work in passive mode or?? (QC options will not function once battery is dead for example)
Fit with sunglasses
Comfort on a longer trip (clamping, weight etc)
Robustness (ie can take getting dropped accidentally)
Company service record for warranty or repair.
Storage case size (the smaller the better)
I have a Telex 850 right now and it is OK but I do notice a bit of background noise leaking in. Current outfit mostly flies cold mic in cruise or above 10000'. Do not care about bluetooth one way or another.
Cheers

Headsets are like watches, shoes, or jock straps... you gotta try them yourself and find what works for you. Who cares what anyone else thinks? That, and every company claims their headset is the best, or the more innovative, etc.
Try and find a retailer that has a variety of options, or ask around your coworkers or friends and see if they will let you try their headset for a trip or two. Then you'll be able to get an idea of what actually works for you, and not what some talking head on the internet claims.

By far the best headset in the market for airline pilots (in my opinion) are the Proflights. Zero clamping force, incredibly light, the in-ear part of it takes a bit of getting used to, but after a week or so of using it, you'll forget you're wearing a headset. I had to send them in for a minor repair (5 year warranty) and used my old A20s for a couple weeks. They were so uncomfortable in comparison. Especially on flights over 2 hours.
If you fly GA or any props on the side, the A30s will probably be what you want for the sake of noise cancelling. But if all you're flying is jets, the proflight noise cancelling is more than sufficient.

Bose proflight 2
That's a no brainer, buy once cry once ... or be a cheap @#$! and keep the telex 850 and lose your hearing by 50.

The Bose QC and the Ufly Mike is the only way to go. Get some actual use out of your headset beyond the cockpit. Got a DH with a screaming child, doing walk around, driving your tractor in the field. Does everything you need up front plus in the back without looking like a dork.

Sorry but air pods pro are much better for commuting than the QC products for DH’ingTanker299 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 12, 2025 1:34 pm The Bose QC and the Ufly Mike is the only way to go. While I respect that the QC/Ufly combo is a great budget friendly option, and that it has the added bonus of doubling as a regular headset for deadheads, if you are flying professionally 6-10 hours per day, 400-900 hours per year, you should be investing in equipment that is designed for heavy useage. QC headsets were not designed as working headsets. I have not tried it, but I have flown with pilots who use it. From needing to hold the mic up to their mouth because it drops down, to the battery dying short final, to the background noise when they leave their intercom on and hearing each breath they take... I've seen it.
You're a professional pilot. Buy a professional headset.

Yup. Super annoying. I’ve had the other guy transfer control over on base turn because he couldnt hear shit when his battery died.Blackdog0301 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 12, 2025 6:27 pm While I respect that the QC/Ufly combo is a great budget friendly option, and that it has the added bonus of doubling as a regular headset for deadheads, if you are flying professionally 6-10 hours per day, 400-900 hours per year, you should be investing in equipment that is designed for heavy useage. Also you have to crank your own intercom volume to hear him which brings a ton of background noise.
In theory it’s great. In practice it blows.
If you need something for your deadhead or commute, get AirPods.

I've ordered a Sony WH-1000XM4 and Avee mic. Does anyone have any experience with those? From what I understand the headset still works when the battery dies just without the ANC. Is that correct? I don't think it's safe to fly a headset that doesn't work that way.
The Avee mic also seems to be of better quality than the UflyMike. Is that correct?

I have to say I disagree. Might be better for making a phone call. They also very clearly communicate to people you don’t want to chat. Plus now you need to buy 2 headsets one for the front and back. One and done. I also don’t care for in ear stuff. Starts to hurt after a long day, gets quite gross if you don’t clean them and forget letting someone else use them… don’t care to share ear wax with my wife or kids.

It's correct. Avee won't produce any mics for headphones that don't work that way because they are unsuitable for aviation use.Dry Guy wrote: ↑Wed Aug 13, 2025 2:37 pm I've ordered a Sony WH-1000XM4 and Avee mic. I’ve used the Uflymic for about 6 years now. Used the QC35 and now QC45 setup. Can honestly say it’s absolute garbage. The 45 is even worse, noticeable echo when talking on the intercom. Their email support is great, but they just say that’s an issue they know about. In short, buy a proper headset if you can afford it.
