Tips on Getting that First Job
Good day all,
280TT, 140PIC, MIFR Pilot checking in:
Got my group 1 + IATRA in May, and have been applying everywhere since: Survey, small charters, 703/704/705, everything. just crickets. I have a few solid contacts, but ''we're not hiring right now'' seems to be the most common response.
Short of going on a road trip (which I'm planning on doing soon), does anyone have any tips or any insight on places that might be looking for a hardworking, eager, low time pilot?
Thanks

How's your relationship with the flight school you did your training with?

Ramp work. Do a season throwing some bags. Wasaya is good. Numerous others out there: you’ll be flying in no time.

Meh, due to school closures and other factors I ended up doing my training at about 6 schools, never really got established at any of them.JungleRiot wrote: ↑Sat Sep 06, 2025 4:11 pm How's your relationship with the flight school you did your training with?

I desperately trying to do something like that. Applied to all those players, but have yet to hear anything! Thinking of heading up north and knocking on their doors with resumesCaptDukeNukem wrote: ↑Fri Sep 12, 2025 10:38 pm Ramp work. Do a season throwing some bags. Wasaya is good. What have you done so far? If you haven’t showed up in person, your resume usually goes straight into the trash bin. If you want a job you need to put in the work, get in your car and show up to introduce yourself. Emailing won’t get you anywhere.Duchess_Driver wrote: ↑Sat Sep 13, 2025 8:55 pmI desperately trying to do something like that. Applied to all those players, but have yet to hear anything! Yep, but even that needs a bit of luck, if other pilots are doing the same thing you might need to set up shop in town doing something else until a spot opens up.PostmasterGeneral wrote: ↑Sun Sep 14, 2025 5:40 amWhat have you done so far? I would pick a town like Pickle lake or Thompson and make sure they know you are sticking around if nothing is open that day. You could always do road trips from there, get a place or rent a room in town if money is tight, be available short notice and make sure they know that too.
I was a C.P up North and there were usually a few guys around doing other jobs in town waiting for the call, it always paid off in the end, the ones just passing through with a resume and on to the next town needed a big bag of luck, an open spot and nobody in the queue already set up in town.
And yes, for the most part the low time resumes that came in via email were filed and never looked at!

When I was up there they only hired people that showed up in person. Rent a car and hit everywhere from Timmins to Kenora. Be sure to go up to Pickle Lake, Sioux Lookout and Red Lake. Those are your best bets. Don't wear a tie.Duchess_Driver wrote: ↑Sat Sep 13, 2025 8:55 pmI desperately trying to do something like that. Applied to all those players, but have yet to hear anything!
