CPL instrument flight time

Post by wa224 »

Hey guys,
I see in Canada you need 20hrs of IF for CPL not including what was done in PPL. What exactly do you do to make up the 20hrs?
In NZ we only need 10hrs IF for CPL which includes 5 from PPL.
If you go on to do an Instrument Rating after your CPL do you typically only need the extra 15-20 hrs to make up 40 in total?

Generally one would do the instrument rating before the CPL.

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

can do 10 dual instrument, 10 simulator
most people going for career in aviation will do everything simultaneously and wont be far off from the 40
if doing afterwards the instrument time still counts towards the 40

Not true, you can include the time done in PPL or after the night rating. So if you finish your PPL with 5-ish hours of instrument you only need 15-ish for the CPL. Typically the night rating adds another 5 (10 total) and then you only need 10 more for the CPL (20 total). IFR requires 40 total, in my expierence people get the CPL flight test done at 150-180 hours total time, then if you have left over time you can use that for Multi/Group 1/Float to finish the full CPL requirements.

This is not correct. Ref CAR 421.30:
CAR 421.30 wrote: (4)(a) An applicant for a commercial pilot licence — aeroplane shall
(ii) following the issuance of a private pilot licence — aeroplane by Canada or another contracting state, have completed 65 hours of commercial pilot flight training in aeroplanes consisting of a minimum of:
(A) 35 hours dual instruction flight time, under the direction and supervision of the holder of a Flight Instructor Rating — Aeroplane, including:
(III) 20 hours of instrument flight time in addition to the experience stated in subclauses (I) and (II). A maximum 10 hours of the 20 hours may be conducted on an approved aeroplane simulator or synthetic flight training device.
Emphasis added. The 20 hour instrument requirement is after the issuance of a PPL.
