Any low hour straight to right seat jobs in Ontario?
I started training later in life, I understand times are still better than they ever have been historically. I know I'll have to eat shit for a few months/year before a decent job is in the cards. I'm wondering are there any first time jobs you can realistically get without having to ramp or dispatch?
Pretty much everyone I know who got a PIW job ended up having to leave because 6 months to a year resulted in nothing after 2 years.

There are if you're willing to move to the middle of nowhere for a few years. If you're trying to stay near civilization - forget it.

Flight Instructing or skydiving.
There are lots of other jobs out there, but you'll have to make some sacrifices to take advantage of them.
The fewer limitations you have, the more options you'll have.

Get single engine PIC first.
You’ll be an upgradable candidate when you start right seat. Lots of these companies are having to hire direct entry captains because their rampies have no PIC, no ATPL, and sometimes can’t even log PICUS. Direct entry captains means no FOs are upgrading which means PIW are stuck on the ramp for a long time.

Yes there are, but rare. But first, you need to ask yourself if you want that job. Why would an outfit hire you, with minimal experience to fly an aircraft that a pilot with 1000 hours might apply to? Answer: because it's a terrible job, and a more experienced pilot can get a better job. Second, there is a good chance that you won't upgrade because of your lack of PIC experience. And no one will hire you thereafter as PIC, because, again, you have no PIC time and may be seen as a seat warmer.lostav8r wrote: ↑Fri Sep 19, 2025 7:28 pm I started training later in life, I understand times are still better than they ever have been historically. You say that you started later in life. What did you do before? Perhaps you have some transferable skills that a company may like and work your way in that way instead of the ramp.

I find myself in a similar predicament... Right now, I am nearing 900 TT and 740 PIC, most of it as an instructor. But, with inflation, I can't afford to devote myself full-time to a flight school, the pay is just too low. Being class 3, I can at least do it as a sideline...
Isn't it hard to find transferable skills when you've been working outside aviation for most of your life?
Re: Any low hour straight to right seat jobs in Ontario?
Not necessarily. Small companies need a lot of services, yet often for a couple of hours a week. Having one of the skills needed can give you an advantage over other applicants.
Classical ones are people with contracting/building/mechanical experience. But there's accounting, IT, web design, marketing experience that might be attractive to some.
Does that mean that companies would fight over an applicant with 10 years of accounting experience? No, definitely not. But if they have to choose between a 200 hour applicant straight from school, or a 200 hour applicant with 10 years of accounting experience, the latter would win.

Anyone have any leads or can introduce me to someone for Right seat position. I currently have 1100 TT and 400 Multi Time. Thank you.

I worked as a developer, there are some transferable skills but I don’t think any small operator is looking for a programmer haha! If I was say an accountant what’s the chance they’d rather keep someone like that in a ground position? Or is it really hit and missBede wrote: ↑Sun Sep 21, 2025 7:19 amYes there are, but rate. It depends on the company. You're a developer, so you're likely 'better with computers' than the average 60+ small business owner running a business. It's not necessarily a big plus, but every little bit helps during the competition for that first job.lostav8r wrote: ↑Tue Sep 23, 2025 12:06 amI worked as a developer, there are some transferable skills but I don’t think any small operator is looking for a programmer haha! This is basically what hundreds of young pilots want, but now put yourself in the shoes of someone with those connections. Would you put yourself out for some random person on the internet, put your word and your reputation on the line? Because that reference even if it’s “hey this guy is looking but I don’t know him, he says he has these hours though”vrajshah030196 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 22, 2025 7:01 pm Anyone have any leads or can introduce me to someone for Right seat position. Make yourself stand out, get out to places that are hiring, make a good impression, make those connections. Because right now you’re just a random person with some time under your belt, not a unique individual that would be a good fit to xx airline so we should hire them.
