iFR charts and plates ?
Hi
Where can I get access to IFR approach plates online through websites or apps?
I’ve heard about apps like foreflight but before I dive into that maybe there’s something else cheaper?
Thanks again

Re: iFR charts and plates ?
to teach the ifr rating does the instructor have to carry the paper approach plate booklet as a backup to let's say also using an ipad with fltplan?
I would feel more at ease having the paper approach plates teaching the ifr rating on top of having the Garmin 430 already in the plane. I'd like to hear from other instructors that teach the Multi Ifr rating and whether they have in their flight bag the paper approach plates as a backup.

There are no paper plates any more. Well not from nav Canada. Jeppesen do I believe. But why would you want to carry them over an iPad?Z28 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 02, 2025 8:13 pm to teach the ifr rating does the instructor have to carry the paper approach plate booklet as a backup to let's say also using an ipad with fltplan?

You need a digital version. The Garmin 430 does not have plates. So you need something like foreflight, fltplango, or jeppesen to load the plates. You are not legal to fly IFR with just a Garmin 430 and no plates.
Are you an instructor?
Re: iFR charts and plates ?
I bought a portable printer & print the plates I need for the flight, originally printed them full page but found that to be a waste of paper so now print 1/2 sheet so I can get 4 plates on one piece of paper(2 per side).
Ironically on my last ipc the examiner said to me that my iPad just shut off,how do you handle that - I handed him the printed stuff & he was happy.

Just bring two electronic devices. No need for paper. What happens if you can't land at your alternate and you don't have any other plates printed?
ipads tend to shut down in hot sunlight if they have a case, due to overheating. Also, if they're not plugged in the combination of gps, foreflight and bright display can quickly drain the battery.

I use the canon tr150,probably a newer version out there but it just sits on the back seat in case I need it.
Can run on battery & is wireless capable, makes printing super easy.

Jeppesen is stopping paper plates as well.
As an IFR instructor, I carry one device with plates, no backup. The student has their own set, I guess that's a backup. The aircraft I normally fly by myself have integrated plates so that's a backup. ATC has plates and I have a radio and a phone so that's a backup. I guess if I was heading out in an old school aircraft outside of radar coverage I'd probably print out what I need for destination and alternate.
Each person is going to have a different level of comfort. I remember one flight in an old school Baron in poor weather in the mountains with U/S autopilot, I had three stacks of plates printed out in order and clipped together, one for return to departure, one for destination, and one for alternate. These days for all my flights I just grab my iPad and don't think about it beyond that.
