Trying to get to Aklavik/Freddie Carmichael

Post by MatteaPike »

Hi!

I have a buddy who’s working outside of Aklavik until the end of November, on mount Goodenough, and I want to go hang out. Does anyone have any planned trips (and an open seat) to Freddie Carmichael or Mike Zubko, anywhere around there?

Thanks 8)

Northwright or Canadian North don’t have any seats?

I could fly Edmonton to Zubko and fly to Aklavik from there with those airlines, sounds like a terribly forced adventure though :p

Most of the smaller commercial operations the pilots can’t just sell you a seat these days, it’s an adventurous idea and all but times have changed drastically and it’s just not a thing. A charter plane going up is paid for by another client, you can’t just add extras on cash, and the front seats on those empty legs are hot commodities fought over by young pilots looking to start their careers and who have applied to work at anyplace they can get a chance, often spending years as rampies to get that coveted seat. A private guy… well, who flies private to Aklavik for fun, that’s gonna be a chisel charter

If you really want up there, a seat on an airline is your better bet. Have the adventure when you get there

I dont know how good this friend is or what exactly he is doing, but I would bet you might be disappointed in the adventure you will find there when you arrive.

Have you been to some of these northern towns before?

Last year my girlfriend and I flew my mooney from Toronto to PAFA and then to Mike Zubko because we wanted to see the midnight sun and jump in the arctic ocean. Originally the goal of the trip was to see the midnight sun. It morphed into a bit of a different trip and Alaska was added after the fact. Im glad it did because that part was the highlight. We stayed in Inuvik for 2 nights. It was fine, and im glad I saw it. But I never need to go back.

Long story short, I think you'll be bored quite quickly. And not only is there no midnight sun in November... there is no sun at all.

Unless you stumble on someone doing what I did, airline is probably your best bet.

Good luck.

kate25 wrote: Sun Nov 16, 2025 8:17 pm Since Mount Goodenough is remote, most people working there fly in/out via charter from Inuvik (YZF) or Aklavik (CARM). You might contact:

Aklak Air (they serve the western Arctic and might have shared charters or standby seats)
North-Wright Airways (based in Norman Wells but sometimes fly in the region)
Inuvik is YEV.

Good suggestion though

Thanks for all your responses, all good info!
I met a flight instructor on Tinder a little while ago, and I think having a private pilot for a few months made me think it would be easier to find an open seat
Happy flying!

Thanks for the detailed information! I had never even heard the term chisel charter. All my experience with private aircraft happened because of tinder lmfao. I’ll check there!

A chisel charter is very much illegal, and enforcement is pretty strict…. guess if it’s a tinder date that takes money for the flight you could always pretend it’s prostitution instead
