Awaiting arbitration next August. We’ve been told most/all of the 22 upgrades planned are gonna be canceled for 2026 now that the ARs are staying.
Re: Aged WestJet pilots win right to not retire
Thank God !!!!
Finally some good news for the baby boomer generation.
I was worried they were going to run out of money on their reverse mortgage. Maybe with the advances in bio tech we could see triple digit aged captains. I say we voluntary double the LTD premiums to make sure it’ll happen.

Is it not possible to imagine maybe through circumstances maybe they actually can’t afford to retire. I know a guy working past 65 because he was scammed through an investment opportunity, lost most of his savings and still has a mortgage and barely any pension!lostav8r wrote: ↑Sat Nov 22, 2025 8:42 pmYou're forgetting about the 1+ ex wives on payrollTurkeyFarmYQX wrote: ↑Sat Nov 22, 2025 4:24 pm Holy @#$!, was the three houses and a boat not enough?
I don’t judge, I plan on retiring at 60 but also realize shit happens and that could change!
Re: Aged WestJet pilots win right to not retire
That may be the case for some but not the vast majority. Most of the ones I know don’t have a life outside of work to retire to and in my opinion that is more sad than needing the money. 55 and done if things go according to plan for me. There is so much more to life than work.cdnavater wrote: ↑Sun Nov 23, 2025 5:52 amIs it not possible to imagine maybe through circumstances maybe they actually can’t afford to retire. Personally I can't wait to retire to have more time to complain on avcanada about people who didn't retire !ant_321 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 23, 2025 8:27 amThat may be the case for some but not the vast majority. I heard you can retire earlier if you get two slow cookers.

Re: Aged WestJet pilots win right to not retire
What's ironic is that at the ICAO general assembly in Montreal a few months ago, IATA tried to pass a proposal to raise the retirement age from 65 to 67. The very same ALPA that represents WS pilots issued a statement rejecting the idea.

Boomer here…… If such is the case it’s truly despicable and disgusting, those old boomer dudes should move aside and let the younger generation get their upgrades they richly deserve. If these older guys(girls) haven’t got their shit together after 65yrs they never will and nobody below them should suffer because of it.Canadaflyer46 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 22, 2025 4:04 pm Awaiting arbitration next August. It should be that this is a 30 year job - or as long as you hold a medical or are just ready to go. It is wouldn't t matter then whether you are hired at 25 or 35 or 45, everyone gets there time at the top and the progression keeps going.

To be fair, flight training has never been more unaffordable and the same can be said about the cities you're based in. Housing has been a game of the boomers pulling the ladder up so younger people are understandably mad when it happens to their careers as well.
Re: Aged WestJet pilots win right to not retire
I'm not sure how that's relevant to my comment.newlygrounded wrote: ↑Mon Nov 24, 2025 1:33 pmTo be fair, flight training has never been more unaffordable and the same can be said about the cities you're based in. Everyone gets 30 years. Doesn't matter how old you are or when you started.
Boomer wants to fly till you die? Nope, you got your 30, you're outta here.
Lucky millennial was hired at 23? Lucky you, now you got your 30, go get a hobby and enjoy a long retirement from 53. Or if you must, go do something else. But you got your time at the top of this profession and had a long career in the 6 figures. Time to go.

I get the thought behind it but is there any (safety critical) field where this works?altiplano wrote: ↑Mon Nov 24, 2025 1:48 pmI'm not sure how that's relevant to my comment.newlygrounded wrote: ↑Mon Nov 24, 2025 1:33 pmTo be fair, flight training has never been more unaffordable and the same can be said about the cities you're based in. Eff that. They'll be lucky to get 20 out of me. Who the hell wants to work the same job for 30 years.
Re: Aged WestJet pilots win right to not retire
Sad to spend their final years of life working but there’s lots of guys I know who re-married and are in their 60’s and have kids in university. Cost of living isn’t getting cheaper. I would suggest they become simulator instructors.
Companies don’t really want these guys flying because it makes for a scheduling nightmare with routing around US airspace and not having a US alternate.

Re: Aged WestJet pilots win right to not retire
To really reinforce how shameless these losers are, I've heard from people at WJ that most of the senile scumbags sit on reserve knowing they won't get called since they can only fly a handful of domestic routes.

Is this one of those handouts they talk about hating?

Re: Aged WestJet pilots win right to not retire
But it's a really fantastic deal. Get paid $300K to operate a small handful of domestic flights. Why not work past 65 in those conditions? It's a great part-time job!
Re: Aged WestJet pilots win right to not retire
If you're senior enough under 65, you can bid reserve and list yourself last out. You will have the same result.
Also, I am sure that all the guys very vocal about this issue would just quit to leave the place to the younger pilots just because they don't want them to wait more for the upgrade.
