14 minutes in the air and very low on approach upon their return to the departure point; low enough that golfers on a nearby course were hitting the deck as they passed overhead.

Sounds like they developed a problem and then either became distracted or impaired by it during their approach and made unstabilized contact with the runway.

They had a CVR on the airplane and it's been recovered. Hopefully it was serviceable and they can get data off it.

Latest yet unverifed info: baggage door opened after takeoff , bag went into the engine . There is also speculation that the owner / or pilots son was in left seat. it s not known if they were 550 qualified ? the investigation continues . But that baggage being ingested into an engine would explain the reason for inflight emergency and to return . It would also explain to some fashion why if they were on approach single engine flying at the single engine ref + speed if they got behind the power curve n came up short if runway - a baggage door would be increase the drag by ? they would be a test pilot at that point . .

As a current quailfied 550 capt trained in sim for different emergencies. However that wasnt one of them : it will be now on recurrent / condolences to all // thats 2 citation 550 fatals this 2025 year thats 2 too many !

I flew some twin turboprop Beeches back in the day. They had belly pods and doors on either side of the nose cone. I always checked all twelve latches just prior to closing the cabin door. Never had an issue. Also checked the cowl latches carefully on the pre-flight as they can be tricky to see when unlatched(or so I was told). One guy didn't and apparently the could came unlatched in flight with a VIP on board. Be paranoid.

Looks like instrument failure was a factor in this crash.

5 mile vis, heavy drizzle, broken ceiling at 1200 AGL. The plan was to T/O VFR, and get the IFR clearance in the air. High time ex airline pilot in the left seat with a rating limitation of “CE-500 Second in Command Required.” His son, a low time private pilot was in the right seat working the radios, and doing checklists.

After T/O, 1 or more flight instruments failed, they tried to return to the airport, but unfortunately were not successful.

Been going through the details of my insurance over the last few days. Here is what it says on that subject(in part).....

We will not pay, under any of the Coverages, for any loss, damage or liability, if, at the time of the
occurrence, a pilot other than an approved pilot shown on the Policy Data Page, is pilot in command
of the aircraft, nor will we pay if the pilot in command of the aircraft does not hold a valid current
pilot's license with all aircraft type, ratings and endorsements required by law for the flight.

No they won't. But the plane was owned by personal injury lawyers so good luck suing the estate.
