Jazz isn't hiring DEC's. Also they would go to the bottom of the commuting list on AC, whereas they're almost guaranteed a seat on Porter. Sounds like a nightmare scenario to me. With the possibility of flowing to the E2 in the near future, better to stay put or go to PAL I would think.

Are you sure they aren’t hiring DEC? I think they would accept a DEC, but it’s just that anyone with the type of experience to make a successful DEC hasn’t applied to Jazz in quite some time

Why is that, when what Jazz really needs is Captains, not FOs

I think and it’s just a guess but our contract does not allow for the company to exclude someone who has a bare ATPL, which was a complete failure of an experiment. There is still nothing stopping an ATPL holder from bidding to the left before the ink is dry on their initial PPC, which I have seen, new hires with 1700 hours and barely off Indoc coming back through for the upgrade. By barely off Indoc, I’m talking 30 hours after the initial line check.
Upgrade after initial training is obviously more geared toward left seat and has a higher success rate over DEC, so if an experienced pilot were to come through now, they would not sit right seat long!

Initial training, plus indoc. That's long time for a multi-thousand hour Porter dash captain to be earning Jazz FO pay. Especially if the spouse and kids are at home, and still like food. I'm kinda surprised Jazz management isn't talking to the MEC about how to capitalize on Porter's base closures. Hiring experienced captains would be in everyone's best interest after there aren't qualified internal upgrades remaining.

I imagine if they started seeing a bunch of those resumes, they might discuss it.

Jazz has no flying in YHZ anymore and we don’t fly to YQT except on rare occasions. I doubt it would attract any Porter talent.

goingnowherefast wrote: Tue Feb 24, 2026 9:49 am Is Jazz still doing DEC hiring? Some of Porter's displaced junior YHZ and YQT captains might consider it. If they're being forced to commute to Toronto anyway, might as well commute for the company with a significantly more mature contract and working conditions. If they're junior at Porter, making the jump to be junior at Jazz isn't a big deal. In fact, they might get off reserve quicker with all the Porter captains lined up for e2 flow. If AC isn't the end goal, the flow nonsense won't affect them.

Am I crazy?

You don't see my quoted scenario as a possibility? If one is BOTL and commuting for reserve anyway, Jazz has the more mature contract than Porter...who doesn't even have a contract yet.
