Application and age

Post by Me2005 »

Do you put your age in resumee or in cover letter?
If I am 24 years old with 2500 hours I am better to put my age somewhere I imagine?

Sure, why not? I put my DOB on my resume.

Good for you for getting those hours at 24!

Hope I'm not stealing your post, but I have a related question: Do you think AC would prefer to hire younger pilots, provided that they meet the requirements? Since $ is spent on training, I'm guessing they'd prefer to keep you around for quite a while, so would being younger be an advantage in the hiring process?

I actually wanted to modify my question: Younger, but no degree vs. older but with a degree, does the applicant to AC with the degree still get chosen if all the flying experience was equal? If you are younger, would it then be a good idea to put your DOB in your resume as Me2005 asked?

I'm in the younger but no degree group, though I did 2 years of university and had straight A's in my 2nd year. I have some education, but no piece of paper. It was getting expensive to do both, and I wouldn't be considered by AC if I didn't have the minimun flying experience so I decided to concentrate on flying. I want to build the hours now so I don't miss the boat on this movement in the industry, and if things come to a grinding halt, I figure I can always go back to school.

Now that I've totally hijacked this threat, I think I'll repost in the employment tips section...

There is a forcasted demographic problem apparently in the year 2023. They have determined another retirement spike and I have heard they are now looking for younger applicants.

In reality they should probably just get off the pendulum and hire all demographics.

Have heard through the grapevine that the new pilot hiring coordinator is big on post secondary education, particularly aviation college.

What I don't understand about all these machinations going on about retirement spikes etc is how that would in any way be solved by hiring younger applicants exclusively. To me, that just pushes your spike further to the future, it doesn't eliminate it. The only way to flatten the graph is to hire a from a broad range of ages consistently.

All this talk about age brings to mind the fact that discrimination based on age is illegal in Canada. This should not be an issue!

My bad! You're right its discrimination. With that in mind, I think a couple more years is a decent trade for the completion of a degree which will not only help me attain my goal (AC), but also provide me with a back up plan.

Cheers.

Dockjock,

They are hiring a mix of ages. Most of the new hires have not been very young. A few in there low 20s with lower time but most have been high time, very experienced pilots. It seems like people are focusing on the few that got in with lower time (mid 2000s) but that is just a few of 100 new hires. And from the new hire portfolios it seemed like you could cound the low time young pilots on one hand.

spm, point taken. Sheesh!

Of course what I stated would be obvious to those in charge of hiring. It just seems like this is how huge, inaccurate rumours get started, and wanted to point out on this thread that hiring only young people would be pointless. Like the telephone game goes...

"Should I put my age on my application?"
"Only put your age on your application if you're under 30"
"AC wants young pilots"
"AC is only hiring people under 25"
"AC is only hiring people under 25 with 5000 hrs"
"They need to hire fetus's in order to properly fund the pension shortfall"
and so forth it gets quite out of hand eventually.
