YYC or YEG base?

Post by Metpo918 »

Is there any information about Porter opening bases in YYC or YEG in the future?

Should either become a base, expect an exodus of pilots from both CDN North/Flair over to Porter.

Obviously things can change but in the latest company update they specifically mentioned that a western base other than Vancouver is not on their priority list at all.

To add onto this, I doubt you’ll see any big announcements for commitments like this especially until the first CA is in place. Forming bases can be expensive, closing them even more so. I’m sure they’d want some clarity on what they’re getting themselves into first.

Mamagment has also mentioned how they’re focused on the YHM,YYZ,YTZ,YOW,YUL,YHU and YHZ markets. Doesn’t exactly bode well for anyone hoping for another base out west.

Maybe they’ll open a YHZ base for the E2 though, that’d be a smart idea

The YHZ and YQT base closures are fresh on everyone's mind. You'd be crazy to expect any new base openings with the current trend of consolidating crewing at big hubs. Anyone at other smaller bases should be nervous. YVR? YUL?

YUL and YVR are "smaller" by comparison (but both are bigger crew bases than YOW, although YOW has the maintenance hangar). They won't be closing anytime soon. Porter's plan on acquiring partners/codeshares to build the brand is part of the growth plan. Not too many international partners out of YQT and YHZ unfortunately. YHZ and the 'greater area' doesn't support huge growth plans (according to management) but the flying demand is there.

The only base that may not make it long term is YHU, if it is ever established. I suspect that it'll be set up as a mirror to YTZ/YYZ.
YUL for international, and YHU for domestic.

There were rumours of looking at parcels of space on the north end in YEG, but that was 2 years ago and isn't reliable. Management has had to change priorities a few times over the last few years due to various events (planes being damaged by ground crews, engine oil bearing seals, tariffs, fuel charges, etc...)

I can't imagine a secondary airport near Edmonton being viable. The greater Edmonton area population is a quarter of what Montreal is and Calgary is only a three hour drive from Edmonton.
