Ground Wind Concerns

Post by pelmet »

From TSB...

C-FJQZ, a Jazz Aviation LP Bombardier Inc. CL-600-2D24 (CRJ 900), was conducting flight
JZA8111 from Ottawa/Macdonald-Cartier International Airport (CYOW), ON to Winnipeg/James
Armstrong Richardson International Airport (CYWG). Upon landing in CYWG, the aircraft was
instructed to hold position and shut down the engines on the taxiway due to a severe weather red
alert ground stop. Approximately 1 hour later, multiple tornado warnings were issued in the area
and, as winds intensified, aircraft shaking increased. The crew requested and received approval to
restart the engines and reposition to another area. During the taxi, a PAN PAN was declared and
priority movement was provided to he aircraft to taxi to an available gate. There were no injuries or
damage reported.

...anyone had a similar situation. Shows what can happen, even after landing safely, just ahead of the thunderstorms.

I got a little worried once as I was holding short of the runway at Duncan and a heavy helicopter decided to do a low pass over the runway for training purposes and the entire aircraft started shaking. Luckily that is all that happened, but you need to be very careful around helicopters (although in this case I don't think it was my fault).

Reminds me of an airshow I was in a few years back where the military parked their big helicopters on the ramp beside the entrance for the only taxiway from the ramp. Then they have their rotors going while small aircraft like me are taxiing by, leaving it up to me to decide whether to risk taxiing by.
