C172 Night CFIT in BC

Post by pelmet »

From TSB...

C-FZKK, a commercially registered Cessna 172N was operating on a local training flight from
Langley Regional Airport (CYNJ), BC.
The aircraft departed CYNJ at approximately 2200 Pacific Daylight Time. The pilot held a private
pilot licence-aeroplane and was conducting a solo night training flight as part of the requirement to
attain a night rating. At approximately 2217 the aircraft no longer appeared on radar while at an
altitude of 5800 feet above sea level and approximately 17 nautical miles north-northeast of the
CYNJ.
Several residents living in a rural area of Miracle Valley, BC, called 911 to report a downed
airplane. When emergency services arrived, they found that the pilot had been fatally injured after
the aircraft collided with terrain. The aircraft was destroyed; an emergency locator transmitter
(ELT) signal was not received by the Canadian Mission Control Centre (CMCC).
