Good Day,
The news channels and papers here in Moncton have been going wild about a MAL 727 forced to make a fuel dumping & emergency landing at CYQM shortly after takeoff last night.
Mind you they have no idea what they are talking about just like most media outlets in regards to avation stories. They montioned the aircraft was forced to use "Reverse Thurst" to stop as if this is abnormal event!
So my question is this. If you loose your hydraulic systems in a B727 how hard would it be to contol the aircraft? Would one be forced to use force for roll & bank applications? What about other system such as gear, flaps, slats, air brakes, etc? Does the Thurst Reverser deployment require hydraulic systems?
Thanks

With a full loss of system A and B yes, you would be relegated to manual reversion.
The gear is cranked down by the S.O.
There is a standy system that operates the lower rudder.
There is an accumulator so you would have limited breaking (brake and hold them down as to not deplete it), there is also emergency pnumatic brake if required.
Flaps would be lowered using the alternate flap system but you'd be limited to a flap 15 landing as opposed to flap 30 so you'd add 15 kts to your Ref speed.
You would have no spoilers
Reversors would work.
I think that about covers it. Cargo and Fr8 Dog could probably fill in the blanks if I left anything out.

No hydraulics? No problem! Everything has a backup. Flaps can be lowered electrically, reversers are operated with pneumatics, and reversers are used after touch down, not the brakes. Brakes have backups too, when the accumulator is charged, it can be used up to about ten times of braking plus the pneumatic brakes. Landing gears are lowered manually. Thats basically it!!
