Computer problems
Hey guys and gals. I need some computer help. On my home computer, my hard drive crashed. The new one I've got needs Windows installed, except that the cd key was on my old dead hard drive. And I can't retreive any of the old data etc, without a new primary hard drive. Hopefully I'll be able to pull some of my data off the old hard drive setup as a slave drive.
Any suggestions or ideas where to get a windows xp pro cd key? I think it's got service pack 2 included, but I can't be sure.

Look on the side of your computer. No, really.
They often put the O/S product key on a sticker that is attached to your computer. My laptop has a sticker on the bottom with the product key, and I've seen more than one desktop with a sticker somewhere on it.

Please don't tell my mother that I work in the Oilpatch...she still thinks that I'm the piano player at a whorehouse.
Glad you got you machine up and running.
For anyone else, if you do not have a paper record of cd keys or an illegitimate copy
and cannot fing the key code use this

just download the program from one of the mirror sites and run it. It should give you the key for all MS programs office, OS etc...

somewhat along these lines...
I use a burnt XP Pro on my comp and have a ton of keys that work. I just picked one and was up and running no problem... I could get the MS updates etc. But on the last update I did a few months back it came back at me with a message to the extent of "You are using a pirated copy etc. - Contact the place you bought it or whatever"
I don't really care that much that I can't get updates now but since I'm here does anyone know how or if I can get around it?

I've heard you can get key changer software to get rid of your old key. Then get a CD key used on multiple computers ie businesses.
Many of those updates are simply up-ed security measures to prevent software/data piracy. You know, you really want the vid of some barely legal, but you must get 'authentication' first, which rarely works so I'm told. Or trying to watch new DVD ripped movies, but the new encoding is getting tougher.
If everyone bought new software and did everything legit then there wouldn't be a problem right :}
Some of them are of course, legit updates.

Just a quick trip on google and you can bypass all of the security systems in place for software updates... newest service packs etc... Also if you are having issues with videos I would suggest http://forums.afterdawn.com/
For a new OS install these days you really only need a code to get the installation software happy, after that you can side step all of the other piracy measures fairly simply... And if at first you don’t succeed; just look a little longer. There is WAY more brainpower out there trying to bypass security than there is brainpower trying to create it...
Did you get your other drive working then? was it just a failure in the old OS or an actual drive head crash? A neat trick I learned a while ago, if you have a drive that’s doing that “clicking” thing A good way to get it temporarily up again, is to put it in a good zip lock bag; and put it in the freezer. This causes the platters to shrink a tiny bit, which is often enough for the heads to reseat themselves. So when the thing is a frozen brick pull it out and pluger in while its still frozen; Iv saved a good 8 drives with this trick. A LOT cheaper than sending it out to get the platters pulled.
