#1. If you're looking to live on the cheap, the northeast is a good bet. Close to YYC (not close to YBW). A lot of the neighbourhoods are pretty multicultural (including a huge sikh temple in martindale), so don't expect a whitebread podunk setting. On the plus side, there are lots of great little mom and pops strip mall type ethnic eateries.

#2. If you're looking to live on the cheap close to CYBW, best of luck. The NW tends to be more whitebread, but you'll also spend more bread to live there. Calgary is set to pass Toronto as the most expensive place in Canada to buy a house (other than the lower mainland of course), so don't expect to be paying less than $400 a month for shared accomodation.

#3. On the topic of "general advices"

-Just because Ralph Klein used to drink at the Cecil hotel doesn't mean that it's a good idea for you to try it.

-When someone wants to take a trip to the "jungle", they're not talking about the African pavillion at the zoo.

-If someone tries to set you up with a "nice" girl from Forest Lawn, start running. Don't look back.

Please don't tell my mother that I work in the Oilpatch...she still thinks that I'm the piano player at a whorehouse.
