19.
Back then a PPL cost $480 and the Govt. returned $100. I was on an Air Cadet scholarship so my PPL cost nothing.
I built time for my Commercial by renting a Fleet 80 from the Regina Flying Club for $8:00 per hour solo, wet!!!! A Cessna 140 was $10:00 and a 172 was $12:00 per hour, wet. An instructor was $2:00 per hour extra.
A brand new Chevy was $3500 and a cup of coffee was a dime.
Car gas was $0:25 per Imp Gal. I could fill my old Studebaker up for $2:50.
Condoms were called French Safes and you could buy a box for $2:00.
A pack of 25 cigarettes was $0:45.
I was digging through an old box of junk when I came across a ticket for a pair of shoes I had in to the shoemaker for repair back in 1962. Out of curiosity, I went by and the shoe repair place was still there so I took the old ticket in just to see what would happen. This ancient old man took a look at the ticket, shuffled in the back and came out and said "Ready Thursday"
YUK YUK, just kidding..
I went to Flin Flon Man. to fly for Parsons Airways Northern Ltd. and they were chartering a Cessna 180 on floats for $0.50 per mile and a Norseman went for $0.75. A Beech 18 on floats set you back $1:00 per mile. I was paid $300 per month base and $0.03 per mile for the 180 and $350:00 base and $0:05 per mile on the Husky and Norseman.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

15 1/2 years old. Got PL and CPL for free because family ran a flying business. R/W endorsement courtesy of "Uncle Sam" and allowing people to shoot at me as payment. Anyone wanting my services in the ensuing 35 years doesn't get those services cheaply...........and shooting at me costs LOTS more. Lots of real great people in this business, but an over-abundance of some of the "flakiest" bloody people that God ever put on this earth.
cadets
Glider training at 15, Private at 16. Military Wings at 21. Inverted at 300' with smoke on, in a red and white jet at 34. Still flying 5000 hrs + with lots of types in the logbook and too many friends lost to accidents.
Still looking for the next big adventure.

well flying is in my blood, my Great-Grandpa owned a charter company in North Sask, my parents owns a company in North Manitoba.
Started on the dock - 12
Glider License (cadets) - 16
PPL in 5 weeks (cadets 2003) - 17
little bit of float (super cub)
CPL (not college, just the dual time) - 19
little bit of taildragger (citabria)
doing my multi this spring and that should get me up to 350hrs, start flying an Aztec in North Man shortly after.
Also graduating with a B.A. in spring, going into Law School next fall. Maybe do some instructing to keep boredom at bay....

" now 22 with almost $20,000 in debt and planning to do instructor rating "
And had you spent $20,000 on a new car it would be worthless in a few years.

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

First let me start by saying that Goler is a homosexual.
Second, the air force is the way to go. Started flying at 16 and haven't paid a dime. Got taught to fly PROPERLY, got a free degree, and now get do some of the best flying out there. Can't even imagine going back to just flying there and back again.
