Post by mr.blue »

What is this? Does it happen in Ni-Cad batteries?

A battery has an internal resistance. This resistance changes with temperature.

A battery works by chemical reactions. Some of these reactions occurr even when the battery is not connected.

If a battery is damaged, the most likely scenario coming from overcharging the battery, it can heat up to the point that the internal resistance of the battery is so low that it turns into a positive feedback problem wherein the heat causes more chemical reactions, which cause more heat, which is called a thermal runaway.

A NiCd in this situation will explode before it breaks.
