Ice chunks falling onto houses from planes!?!?
Could be just someone after some lawsuit money, you never know. I'd be hard pressed though to think that such a large piece could come off a plane without it first causing aerdynamic problems!

Homeowner blames planes for falling ice

CBC News
For the third time in three years, an icy mass bouncing off the roof of an Ottawa-area home has left the family inside a little shaken up.
Now, they are asking Transport Canada to do something about it.
But despite calls, investigators from the federal agency have not yet come to inspect the most recent intruder – a gravel-filled chunk measuring nearly two metres long.
Karen Scroggins has kept the ice, in sections, in the family freezer since it landed on her Barrhaven home, on Feb. 13.
"All of a sudden, right over our heads, there was a loud crashing sound like something had exploded on the roof," Scroggins told CBC News. "Then there was a rolling sound and then, a smash as something hit the sidewalk."
Scroggins, whose home is on the flight path of the Ottawa International Airport, says that when she rushed outside, she could hear an airplane heading in that direction.
Up to 50 jets a day fly over her neighbourhood, she said.
Other neighbours say it hasn't happened to them, and they are astounded that the Scroggins home continues to get hit.
"I don't know if we're just off the flight path, but so far, nothing of concern for our home," Kathleen Watkinson said.
"For the Scroggins, it's three years in a row. That's a bit disconcerting."

Gravel filled chunk 2 meters long...
OMG!!! As if picking up ice wasn't bad enough, now I have to worry about GRAVEL!!!!
2 meters long... Ok, I could be stupid (istp will back that up) but don't most JETS (which is what he said it was) use heated leading edges for ANIT-ice. Where did this huge freaking peice of crap come from? And if it was broken off by boots, would it really be 2 meters long? If it's strong enough not to shatter after falling 1000 feet or so on to a roof, could boots really clear it off the plane?
Common sense would tell most people that this is rediculous, but I guess the CBC knows best.
Lift your feet people, the BS is rising fast...

Dyslexics of the world... UNTIE!
If she kept it in the freezer, it just may be blue ice leaking from the shitter. But gravel is a tough one. Except maybe it is from a B737 or 727 that has been operated from a gravel strip and the gravel stuck to the mess from the leaking shitter. This woman may be in the market for both a new roof and a new freezer. I wonder if her steaks taste different?
The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Ummm... me thinks it must be from a passing Caravan... I heard that they really acumulate ice and have problems shedding gravel
PS Does she live in a nuclear shelter or what? 2 meter chunk of ice and it didn't end up in her basement? Come on! Probably just looking for money or lobbying for a change of flight paths. Good luck.

All too common.
The airport was there before Barrhaven was, so she doesn't have much of a leg to stand on. Maybe she can prop herself up with that chunk of ice?
All snarkiness aside, I can't for the life of me figure out where a 2 meter long chunk of gravel-studded ice could have come from.

Please don't tell my mother that I work in the Oilpatch...she still thinks that I'm the piano player at a whorehouse.

I think that was the shitter juice also... it should be blue but who knows if the station that filled it up, ran out of the blue pills and just filled with the water. I've seen a 737-200 leaking blue juice over the back and front of the plane and it was easy 3-4 meters long.

Any Canadian North Boeing operating into YOW won't be anywhere close to a gravel runway prior to landing. That route is all pavement.captainsweaty wrote:I'd say First Air or Canadian Norths A/C have a pretty good chance of picking up crud in the gear wells from some of the strips they work out of like Ekati, Diavik. Also wasn't it just +5 and raining in Iqaluit???

Ice chunks falling onto houses from planes!?!?
Saw this on the news...the pieces were long, staright and definitely not lav juice. The gravel looks looked more like the sand they throw down on taxiways. Maybe it's off a DASH-8 gear leg or leading edge given the length of the ice.
I also checked out the woman's address by looing up her listing in the local phone book and then looking up the street on Googe earth. the entire street is slightly right of the LOC so for this to happen more than once to the same house is a lucky shot!.

Well IF it was from a dash dropping it's gear then it could only be comming from Toronto or Montreal.
Montreal weather for the 13th was:
MAX TEMP : -2.9 °C
MIN TEMP : -13.1 °C
MEAN TEMP : -8 °C
PRECIP ACCUMULATION : Trace
And CYTZ:
MAX TEMP : -1.1 °C
MIN TEMP : -4.4 °C
MEAN TEMP : -2.8 °C
PRECIP ACCUMULATION : 0 mm
And there was no precip for either of these locations the day before so I wonder where this ground snow/slush is comming from?
Me thinks this story is from the same slow news days that spawned the story about TCAS on the national the other day. If TC doesn't step in soon planes will be crashing into each other and the sky will be falling - with ice!
