Yukon?

Post by Rowdy »

Howdy folks!

For all those in the yukon or who have been there in the past couple of years. Are there any chances for low timers? I noticed quite a few ops. when I was fumbling through the air operators search on the TC site.

Good/bad/ugly? Pm me if you like.. I might just be up there for two or three days in the very near future :)

cheers,
Rowdy

How low of a timer are ya? There are only a few operators up here. Most of the float/outfitters will require higher times.

I agree with ... The Yukon falls into one of those "desireable places to live" category and as such there is usually a flood of resumes from higher time pilots.

Having said that.. anything is possible. Be wary of the operators and do your research 8)

Last I heard, most want to see 1000hrs, and YK forestry contracts now demand that pilots have at least+600Pic. As a result fire patrol jobs are now out of the question for new cpl's.

Does Air North ever hire from outside for the Hawker or 737? I spoke with Joe a few years ago and know that he generally prefers to promote from within. I agree with that policy, but can't see myself going to Whitehorse to work on the ramp at this point!

Depends if you come with type experience or not. He's hired people from outside, but they were all pretty current on type.

Try Alkan Air. They are looking for guys according to the job postings. I think they want 1000 hours. It seems to be a desirable place to be.

If you are referring to my previous post , there was no bashing. I was simply stating a fact. They just hired a 19yr old with 100 hrs, and are putting him through his CPL, Multi and IFR to put him straight into the right seat of the King Air. So tell me where the experience is. No bashing intended. Not giving any opiniions...Just stating the facts.
If you were not referring to my previous post, then disregard. It just goes to show there is hope for the low timers..

If I believe you that a company is paying for a guys CPL/MIFR and there is not more to the story - Good for that guy...

Where is the experience? In the left seat and a whole lot of experience will be getting developed on the right side - not to mention if he's a good kid and he understands what is being given to him he will be a pretty devoted dedicated employee...

I read your other post... maybe I'm missing something but I really don't see where you're coming from. On the turbo-Otter and refusing rotations on the 208 and losing your job - suck it up and move on - looks like Alkan has...

Costs are pretty reasonable considering Whitehorse is north of 60. Lots of Big Box stores. A typical two bedroom basement sweet runs you about $700 last I heard. Gas is 99.9/L.

Hey Rowdy,

A decent appartment in Whitehorse will run you about 900$/month, food is a bit more expensive than in the big cities, so is heating fuel and electricity. Housing prices is on the rise, a modest house will start at 200k. On the flip side, no provicial taxes on products, and less income tax deductions on your pay check plus a bunch of tax breaks like nothern allowance, trips taken outside Yukon, and so on. It evens out.

DO NOT stay at the Airliner!!!!

Well, that is, unless you like pre-stained sheets and hair on your pillows..

The Airport Chalet is marginally better. I've stayed there, it's ok.

Expect $85 bucks a night at the Chalet.

Also could try the Yukon Inn or the Town and Mountain. I think most other places will be higher.

bugspray,

Why did they choose to go with a caravan rather than a second turbo otter, especially if they're planning to use it for bush work? Have they got the first one back from repair yet? Its disappointing to hear an experienced driver be let down.

Hello buck..

The question should rather be "Why did they choose to go with a caravan rather than a twin otter"...
I was pushing for a twin otter for the last 2 years. They want an IFR bush machine. Well they got neither with the caravan. And one less pilot to boot. But the resumes are already piling up with guys eager to replace me. Again i say, its their loss not mine. At least it won't be me up there over the rocks in a snowstorm some night, with my life in the hands of one engine with ball bearings and fans rotating at 37500 rpm...I've got a whole 7 hours in a PT-6, and already had a near engine failure. But they never quit do they!! Theres many dead people that would beg to differ if they could answer that question.
And yes, the otter is back together again. And they better be careful or they will be rebuilding it again next year.
Anyways, i wish them the best and they got to do what they got to do, and I have to look after myself. I'm not going to be trashing anyone or any company, any comments are just factual, and not intended to denounce anyone.
