Jazz is the highest paying airline

Post by Bede »

I am rather bored right now, because I'm sitting around my parent's house on reserve (I commute). Then a thought crossed my head. I am perhaps one of the most highly paid professionals in aviation right now. I make $2900/month, and I have worked 16 hours in the past month. That equals $181/hr. Don't you widebody AC skippers wish you got my pay. :x :x

Do any of you do anything decent on reserve? I guess life would be easier if I was actually at home.

Well if you're that bored, figure this one out for me.

A pilot makes $2900/month. He is on reserve all month and doesn't fly one day. What is his hourly pay?

See, I'm stumped. $2900/0=ERROR ERROR PROGRAM NOT RESPONDING END NOW? YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO END A NON RESPONSIVE PROGRAM SEND ERROR REPORT?

Then I smash my monitor and go suck my thumb....

You have got the right idea very early in your career. It is all about quality of life. Just divide the number of days per month you work into your salary and you won't chase that upgrade to left seat anytime soon . A senior F/O makes a lot more per day than a junior Capt who works all month.
Every CEO of the Canadian Establishment said "if I had it to do it over again ,I would have spent more time with my family". That's something we can all do; especially on reserve.
Granted it is pretty bad sitting in a crash pad on RSV but once you get to your home base Rsv is great (provided there is adequate coverage) .You can put it lots of quality sweat equity time on your projects while the company sends money.
You also get offered much better trips than you can hold and then "there's sick if required"
The principal cause of man's despair is his pursuit of happiness!!!

Lets see. I make $5000/month, and I've flown 4 hours in the past month and a half. So that means I'm making $1875/hour of flight. And I want to leave this for Jazz? Shall I give my head a shake?

At Jazz a senior F/O may make more a day than a Junior Captain, but at the end of the year when you look at T-4'S there is no comparison. Sitting reserve isn't all its cracked up to be. Always walking around with a cell phone or a pager. Can't really make any concrete plans because you might not be around, if you don't fly you are giving up about $450-500 in pay and about 650-800 in perdiems every month.. I'm in the bottom half as an F/O and only work 12-14 days a month, no pager, no cell phone. I know when I'm going to be and when I'm going to be there. I used to be on reserve and am glad to be rid of it!!! Of course we don't have "sick if required" either....

Kind of sad you blokes count per diem as pay....

My dreams always included what I could do with and for my kids rather than sitting around home gloating about not having to do what I supposedly love to do and having no money to do anything.

Yeah, I'll give up my life to satisfy my deprived ego any day......NOT!!

For those that got confused: my original post was supposed to be tongue in cheek. I'm really bored sitting on reserve away from home and I don't actually think I'm the highest paid pilot in Canada. Sorry for the confusion this may have caused.

I guess the only thing worse than a forum post for conveying subtle humour is sending a quasi humourous ACARS message (no emocons)

I managed to sit on rsv in YHZ for almost 3 months of winter once. I got so much done around the house it was awesome.... then crew sked called and said 'but you have to fly, you won't be current' and off I went for a severe clear day and started the cycle over again. I'm one of those guys that loves reserve.

That equals $181/hr.
Hah!
T4 = ~$72K Logbook hours flown = 183.5 Division = $392/hr

You have to live in YTH for the summer to get that though NorthShore :) That is a deduction that does not come off the pay cheque :)

Lets say that you are the third from the bottom of a reserve list and do not want to go flying due to a cold or flu or fatigue or something but at the same time, do not want to burn up sick days.

SICK IF REQUIRED will only dock you a sick day if infact on that day, they got down to you. So if you take 5 days off as "sick if required" it may only cost you one sick day or none.
