Is it really the end for Parallel?
Heard a rumor that Parallel Aviation in YBL folded. Is this true?
You guys should use the search feature more
RECAP I made a post a few months back about this; but this is what happened:
Because of a family emergency the old owners of Parallel decided to downsize operations and sell off the Victoria and Campbell River offices. Thankfully Tom, Parallel’s owner has decided to continue operations on the float side of the business out of the Shawnigan lake office. The float operation is maintaining the Parallel name and is operating under the title of Parallel Sea Planes (http://www.parallelaviation.com). Iv talked to Tom, he is running seaplane training and section 7, out of Shawnigan AND his pad at Pat Bay (YYJ) (Hint Hint to the other operator who was so kind as to forcibly remove his sign; way to share the love dude, way to share the love…) On a side note I think Tom is also looking for some class 3s or higher with some float time, so feel free to give him a shout!
As for the Campbell river office; they have a new owner (Old CP/CFI) and will be operating under the title of “Discovery West Aviation.” I don’t think they are open YET, but should be very shortly. Once again YBL will be specializing in bush training… I think they will be operating 172s, 150s, and I heard a rumor they are going to have a Super Cub (however I have NOT confirmed this so feel free to give Kevin a call!)
And as for the Victoria Office, we are back open (im a class 4 there) and are operating under the title of IPFA (Island Pacific Flight Academy) http://www.ipfa.ca We are presently only running a training base, but within the next 6 months will likely be restarting section 7 as well… At the moment we are operating 172s, and a Katana; I don’t think the new ground school schedule has been set yet, but it should be published soon… PS we are also looking for FIs and dispatch…
Hope that helps!

If he is looking for float plane instructors why the need for a class 3 instructor?

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Tom has been communicating by e-mail with me about his float plane business in Shawnigan lake and I'm pretty sure he will try and find ex bush pilots if he wants to hire anyone.
Anyhow the industry needs float plane schools so hopefully Tom will figure out how to turn out a good product.

My…… how the rumor mill does like to turn… No, TC did not pull anything nor were there any threats too… The sad thing with the state in aviation here is anytime a company changes hands people assume there was some shady business going on…. A close member of the family was diagnosed with cancer. Tom and Kristine bought parallel when it was 2 AC; before they divided it up it was the biggest school on the island… There comes a point when happiness, living, and family come before work; so a decision was made to cash out; and spend time on more important things in life; while still keeping a foot in the door with the floats… Hence the present situation three companies/owners instead of one...
Btw sorry if that comes off a bit harsh; my buddy just called me about Powel River… I am not in the best of moods at the moment…. Sorry…

I heard that the end of the FTU had nothing to do with an illness, but if that is the case, I feel sorry for those affected. At the time that the OC was handed over (not pulled), there were a few issues with TC and their maintenance but nothing major. Plus their float operation was doing much better than the FTU. As Cat mentioned, hopefully by focussing on the float operation, good West Coast float training will be provided.
