Congressman jailed over bribery

Randy Cunningham said he had lost 90lb since pleading guilty
A Republican congressman in the United States has been sentenced to eight years in jail for taking $2.4m (£1.4m) in bribes from a defence contractor.
Randy "Duke" Cunningham - a 64-year-old decorated Vietnam War pilot - pleaded guilty to conspiracy and tax evasion.

Cunningham accepted cash and gifts including a Rolls-Royce, a yacht and $40,000 Persian rugs in return for doing favours and awarding contracts.

The case is one of several corruption scandals involving senior Republicans.

Lobbyist Jack Abramoff says he will name numerous congressmen who accepted millions of dollars worth of bribes from him - mostly Republicans, but also Democrats.

I have ripped my life to shreds due to my actions

Randy Cunningham

Meanwhile the former leader of Republicans in the House of Representatives, Tom DeLay, faces trial in Texas on money laundering charges.

Correspondents say the scandals threaten to influence the course of mid-term elections in November.

Plea for mother

Cunningham's punishment - eight years and four months in jail - is one of the longest sentences ever meted out to a congressman.

He also was ordered to pay $1.8m to cover unpaid taxes.

In an unsteady voice he told the judge in the San Diego courtroom: "Your honour I have ripped my life to shreds due to my actions, my actions that I did to myself.

"I made a very wrong turn. I rationalised decisions I knew were wrong. I did that, sir," he said.

He pleaded to see his 91-year-old mother one last time before going to prison, but was refused permission.

'Most corrupt'

District Judge Larry Burns asked why Cunningham took such a course.

"You weren't wet. You weren't cold. You weren't hungry and yet you did these things," he said.

"I think what you've done is you've undermined the opportunity that honest politicians have to do a good job."

Washington historian Fred W Beuttler told the Associated Press that Cunningham's corruption was the worst in the history of Congress.

"In the sheer dollar amount, he is the most corrupt," he said.

Prosecutor Phil Halpern said Cunningham helped award contracts that squandered millions of dollars on "systems the military didn't ask for, didn't need and frequently didn't use".

Cunningham was taken into custody much thinner than when he pleaded guilty in November. He said he had lost 90 pounds (40kg) since June.

Lost 90 Lbs  I guess he wanted to appear more attractive to the boys on the inside. :ANAL: :smt107
On the bright side there are many more Republican war mongers to follow.

Good, fucker deserved it. If only the rest of the guys in DC were dumb enough to get caught...

Also, if someone can wake up the liberal idiots in Washington state, so that another fighter jock get what he deserves (being honoured, not sent to prison), it'll all be good.

The University of Washington's student senate rejected a memorial for alumnus Gregory "Pappy" Boyington of "Black Sheep Squadron" fame amid concerns a military hero who shot down enemy planes was not the right kind of person to represent the school.

Student senator Jill Edwards, according to minutes of the student government's meeting last week, said she "didn't believe a member of the Marine Corps was an example of the sort of person UW wanted to produce."
WTF?

Well no real WTF here, Boyington's war stories were mostly lies plus he was a heavy drinker from start to finish so...I can understand their position.

Contrary to Cunningham! If you had heard about him before his demise you would be like me, still trying to understand how he could do this.

"was credited with destroying 26 enemy aircraft, tying the record for most aircraft destroyed by a pilot in American Uniform," for which he was awarded the Navy Cross.
But there going to honour Tom Brokaw  If this guy wants to make a statement about the "Greatest Generation" he should refuse it untill they honour "Pappy"!!

Actually I went for a google look and find that the student senate rejected Boyington's name because:
"it is not appropriate to honor a person who killed other people"

Man the "dude" step up only to clear his debts and get $$$ from Chenault, not by ideal or honnor.

Anyway I won't extend on his case and to finish my posts in this "Cunningham" topic, being a "war hero" doesn't mean you are the perfect/model person portrayed by the country.

.:

I first heard about it in another forum, and yes, us leathernecks aren't impressed, but when are we ever impressed when things aren't geting blown up, but I digress.

WSU (Pullman Wa.) is honoring Tom Brokaw, which is fine and dandy, because it's a broadcasting award, so naturatly he would be a person to fill the spot.

At UW (otherside of the state in Seattle) those dipshits are crying wolf on ol' Pappy. I'm sure these kids took off presidents day honoring George Washington (a general in the American army). They're nothing but a bunch of hypocrites.

Looks like cooler heads prevailed, and Pappy is getting his day. The School is going to honor Col. Boyington after all.
Boyington honored

Washington’s state Senate passed a resolution to honor Col. Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, a World War II pilot and Medal of Honor recipient, weeks after the University of Washington student senate shot down a measure to honor the Marine, a UW alumnus.

The student senate triggered a firestorm after rejecting by one vote a resolution to create a campus memorial for Boyington.

According to minutes detailing the students’ debate of the issue, Ashley Miller said the university had enough monuments to “rich white men,” and Jill Edwards questioned whether a Marine was the type of person the school wanted to produce.

Miller said later her comments were made as part of a general discussion of memorials on campus, not about Boyington specifically. Edwards said she did not mean to offend anyone, but was trying to start a discussion.

State Senate resolution 8728 can be viewed online at http://www.leg.wa.gov.

See, pinko-commie-tree-hugging gets you no where.
