First summer in the bush

Post by bater »

Hey! It's confirmed, summer 06 will be my first season flying floats for a fishing camp in North Eastern Ontario! I'm probably the most excited guy in Canada today.

Anyways, my question is this: what can you guys suggest for clothing? I was thinking of a flgiht suit with my name embroidered on the left breast, and CREW stamped on the back. How bad-ass is that!? just kidding of course!

Any other tips would really be appreciated

I recommend a Seneca jacket and some Gayviators. You'll be so cool the mosquitos won't be able to get a heat signature!

Some of those tackle boxes are big and heavy, so I'd wear a pair of steel toed boots. Dont bring all nice expensive clothes with ya. By the end of the summer, every pair of pants will have grease stains on them somewheres, as with your shirts. Have a pair of coverall's, (or that flight suit u mentioned!!) for those dirty jobs. And have lots of gloves. If you are like me, you will have to put a string on them up through your shirt sleeves so you dont loose them. Weather can be from one extreme to another. In 2000, we had about 3 t-shirt days all summer in NW ontario. The next summer it was +37 for what it felt like weeks on end. If you are staying for hunting season, have some really old clothes and an old jacket, moose blood dosent wash out to easily(when u get time to wash.......)
Also, dont forget to have a waterproof license holder(if u do any flying) because you will, being a newbie and all, be thrown in the lake when you are not falling in.
Oh yea, and make sure your pants have deep pockets for all that tip money you will BS out of those americans!
Have Fun.

I personally can't stand flying in steel toes, not to mention, if I go in the drink for whatever reason, I don't want to try to swim in them. The best footwear I've found is Merrell hikers. They are amazingly comfortable and have good traction on all surfaces and last forever. I have a 3-year old pair now that are still as good as new. I prefer the shoes instead of boots and not-waterproof. For me, it's all about keeping my feet cool, and waterproof boots don't do that well. For clothing, I always have a pair or two of Carhartt jeans because they stand up to any abuse. I also like to have a pair or two of quick-dry, Columbia pants for the hot weather, preferably the kind that zip-off into shorts. Other than that, a bunch of old t-shirts and the odd flannel shirt for the chilly mornings. Oh, and some Helly Hansen underwear for the fall when it's cold. An old ball cap never hurt anyone either. And good shades.

One propane tank on the toe makes steel worth while. EIther t hat or a pair of hicking boots.

As for clothing, what dooes your boss prefer? Flightsuit, workpants, shorts or a dress? I have worked for bosses that would allow anything from a nice flight suit and shaved every day to shorts with work socks and a nice red/black checkered jacket.

3 pairs of underwear and socks in your flight bag or stuffed into a crevice of the plane somewhere, coveralls, 2 pairs of sunglasses for when you drop the first pair off the floats into the lake, bug jacket, decent pair of rawhide gloves, sunblock, and steel-toed boots. And steal the g/f's ipod too, for those weather days.

Thanks for all the good advice guys... sounds like a trip down to Value Village may be in order.

ISTP... yep, you did help out with those PIC hours.!! Showing me just how to fly the shit out of a float plane didn't hurt either! HAHA!

It is good to see a entry level pilot asking for advice as far too many 200 hour wonders think they are all that and a bag of chips. Value Village is a good place to get your bush clothes. After your t-shirts become too dirty to wear you can always turn them into rags for keeping your a/c clean. Do NOT wear shorts for flying in the bush. Long pants will give you time to get the a/c down now in case of an engine fire, whereas what protection will shorts give you? If your plane did go down or you had to land on a lake and await mechanical help you will be thankful for wearing those long pants when the bugs come out.
Good luck with your new job and good flying!

Congrats Bater, It has been a while since I went that route but the lessons I learned back then have stuck with me the rest of my career.

Be smart and be safe.

Pocket with zippers or flaps will keep glasses and knives etc in your pockets and my best discovery... those propane tanks (even full) float!! :D

Have fun!
