Few years ago in Manitoba I ran into an older guy that worked for H&L. Probably 60 years old now. He was flying one of the 337s and I believe his first name was Joe. He was an interesting and fun guy to talk to. I know I'm real skimpy with details, but does anyone know him, his last name and where he is now (ie:still flying?). thanks.

That's probably Joe Van Horne you are thinking of. He did some of our training at Hicks for the 2003 season. Not sure where he is now.

When I met him in 2003 I looked in my original logbook and found that he had done some of my initial training for my PPL back in 1987 at the London Flying Club.

Could anyone provide me with some info on the Geraldton base? (accomodations, food places, location of closest LCBO, beer store and pubs)

The Beer Store and the LCBO are conveniently located almost next to each other at the north end of town by the railway tracks. Ask anyone in town about The Bakery...a great place to eat. And as for pubs...you're goin' love "the Blue."

you're going to G-Spot, eh? well, well, well... good flying, but watch your Ps and Qs with the MNR (as usual) The observers - non-MNR observers- (should they be the same ones) are a treat for the senses, in particular your olfactory!!! one is a sweet man, but stinks and is blind as a bat; one smokes up, falls asleep, reads nasty porn on the flights, pisses in the back of the plane (in a bottle) and farts something fierce. The other (should they still be around) screams at turbulence and lightning or even light rain, tells you how to fly and is generally a basket case. None of them can map read - or tell time, for that matter. Unfortunately, they get paid twice what you do and can report you to the MNR for not being nice to them... and then you're fucked....
enjoy the flying, turn on the intercom ISO switch, and you're set. enjoy!!

PS: do not take the tanker pilots parking spots- on the ramp or in the lot -and do not go into their room...basically avoid eye contact.

I've just been informed that I will be stationed in either the Dryden or Geraldton crew base. Could some one give me some info on these places regarding stuff like:
What is in them?
How many ppl per place and the general layout of each living quarters.
Availability of internet, telephone, tv, useful dishes(ie. pots and pans) and blankets, etc.........

I miss the good ol' days of watching the natives fightin' in Geraldton....Seriously, you're only up there for 4 months so no matter how crappy the town is you're at, time flies, and make the best of it. I had a lot of fun up there. You'll learn to like fishing even if you don't now.

you'll find out soon, but i heard they put bunk beds into some of the already small places, so i am guessing about 4 pilots per cabin. get some ear plugs. pots and pans and that kinda stuff is supplied. You set up your own phone line (one per cabin) and Sat TV is hit or miss ( we had it in one place in Dryden, but not the other in G-town) Get a library card whereverer you are for internet access. Dryden has a Wallymart, so anything you need can be picked up... G-town only has a crappy Biway, but new grocery store should be in by then. see ya around this summer, have fun.
