Toronto City Centre Airport.....what a "S-Hole"...
Blew into YTZ Saturday, a little after 1600. What a crap-hole! Couldn't buy a frikken meal! What is Toronto? The largest city in the country? Sure is the centre of the universe.....ask anyone there. But they cant have even a snack bar open on a Saturday afternoon? WTF? But I did get a kick out of the anti airport banners hanging from the decks of the cheap housing along the most expensive real estate east of "Hong-Couver"....tax dollars hard at work!
I'm sure it'll change when RD takes over the joint with Porter, and it was a great little airport when I flew for Skywalker....but in today's world, it's a shit-hole! Kind of like, YPM!!!!! YXL has way more to offer! Typical Toronto!

RD has already taken over the aiport, at least the scheduled airline facilities and closed it down. Perhaps that is why nothing is open, with no commercial flights to bump up business.Doc wrote:Blew into YTZ Saturday, a little after 1600. What a crap-hole! Couldn't buy a frikken meal! CYTZ has all the ambience of a concentration camp under construction.
From the tall fences topped with barb wire, to the piles of crap where the buildings were torn down, to the trailer that is the FBO, it is indeed a shithole.
Nicest part of CYTZ is the ancient, threadbare, worn-out empty white terminal building.

RD takes the "crafty dog" to a whole new level! He would only start an airline on the island with a bridge. Toronto says "sure", then backs out...RD says "give me 25 mil"....Toronto hands it over...and RD starts his airline without a bridge....with a 25 mil cash injection from "Toronto The Stupid"....WAY TO GO R.D. !!!!!!!!!! THE MAN IS AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME!

Hey, watchit! That sounds racist. This is 2006 in overly-politically correct Toronto. It's "milk of colour" to you, buster.cyyz wrote:Do you put milk in?? What about the milk... Gotta love the crappy FBO that used to be Shell East - I think it's MillionAir now. Crappy little place witha couple of busted chairs, two year old magazines and NOTHING ELSE.
Buy $700 worth of fuel and they make us pay for two ferry tokens so we can escape for a few hours.
Worst place I've ever had to hold.

Please forward this question to our beloved mayor... the man who paid $35 million to NOT build a $20 million bridge!Walker wrote:isnt the river like 20m accross? Really..... how hard would it be to build a bridge?!?!!?!?!?!?!?
The old shell east is now a pile of rubble that will eventually be the Porter terminal. (It was still active up until a few months ago, under the new CCAL management) The Aerocentre West is now City Centre Aviation Limited (West) (CCAL), a division of REGCO, and yes, they do still charge ridiculous amounts for the privilege of gracing their ramp ($10 for a single for less than 1 hour, $25 for the day, $35 overnight IIRC). The fuel that they supply is GOCO, and they run hangars 3-6.sakism wrote:Gotta love the crappy FBO that used to be Shell East - I think it's MillionAir now. The alternative is ESSO at the east end of the ramp, now operating out of a brand new "triple-wide" trailer (having lived for 8 months in the old "terminal A" building, and in a rather shabby trailer 50 feet west of their current location prior to that). While they lack actual tie-downs, they can provide you with a broken bit of concrete parking lot barrier and a frayed bit of rope, if you're lucky. They price their fuel 5-10 cents cheaper than CCAL, and don't charge ramp fees, except for extended stays (1 night free with fuel purchase, up to a full day without). The new facility is pretty decent (just try not to trip over the torn up pavement/sand pits on groundside), including free wireless internet access, satellite tv (fixed again after dish blew off in a storm a couple of weeks ago), free coffee/tea/hot chocolate/water and a weather computer that would best serve as an anchor, except for the addition of a Super Mario Brothers 1/2/3 emulation.
So yes, YTZ has its shortcomings, but I would not describe it as an absolute shithole. Doc, I think that you're right that things will improve once Porter is up and running, but I think that you will see thing improve even before then, as I have reason to believe that other operators are going to try to increase sked and charter service in and out of the island. The location is ideal, and if people can get around the few noisy local idiots, it could provide excellent service. Had a Q400 fly by today, and if anybody tries to complain about their noise, they deserve to be shot! Even on the overshoot, this machine made the 172s doing circuits seem loud! If people really wanted to keep the noise levels down, they would ban the MU2s (etc.) and allow the citations (etc.) in! [not that I don't like a little noise... seeing the flight of 4 harvards on Remembrance day was awesome!]
Well, that about does it for my rant... I apologize for any bias expressed in the above--I try to be objective, but I'm sure that my biases show through...

Those "few noisy local idiots" as you call them have had their way for decades when it comes to a bridge at the island. What makes you think that will change anytime soon? The location is ideal, and if people can get around the few noisy local idiots, it could provide excellent service.
Don't get me wrong...I think the location is ideal and Toronto is crazy for not utilizing this easy access to the downtown core but I just don't see why anything will change now.
"The ability to ditch an airplane in the Hudson does not qualify a pilot for a pay raise. The ability to get the pilots, with this ability, to work for 30% or 40% pay cuts qualifies those in management for millions in bonuses."
Don't forget Druxy's, if it's still there. $8 for a bit of crappy corned beef on rye, no pickle. 30 square foot patio, not facing the runways. Open 11-1 alternating tuesdays.
3 flight schools, 3 FBO's, 1 FBO has 2 lounges at opposite sides of the airport, all in various states of bankruptcy/fire sale conditions (or so it seems). Seaplane ramp rotting away. Tie up space for *perhaps* one C172 on floats.
If the airport was allowed to succeed, it would. Porter is the first step!
