Will WJ consider an Exit Strategy?

Sunwing flies east

BRENT JANG

Globe and Mail Update

Sunwing Airlines, the upstart in domestic skies, is poised to shake up the competition in Atlantic Canada. The new carrier is part of a travel company, owned by Toronto's Hunter family, that specializes in winter vacation packages to sun destinations but is expanding into scheduled summer flights within Canada.

While Sunwing has only two 189-seat Boeing NG 737-800 aircraft, it's adding a third plane in June and that could spell potential trouble for closely held CanJet Airlines, controlled by Halifax businessman Ken Rowe.

WestJet Airlines Ltd., Air Canada and Jazz Air Income Fund are expected to weather the storm from the new entrant, says National Bank Financial Inc. analyst David Newman.

While Sunwing could erode some marginal network traffic from WestJet, WestJet should only compete with Sunwing on three non-stop routes — Toronto-Halifax, Toronto-St. John's and Toronto-Charlottetown,” Mr. Newman said in a research note.

With Halifax-based CanJet recently adding a 10th plane to its fleet, it will be interesting to see how the stepped-up competition plays out, he said. “The Atlantic market could become particularly competitive.”

CanJet already faces contract talks with newly unionized pilots and flight attendants, so the emergence of Sunwing adds to the pressure, Mr. Newman said.
Should be an interesting summer in the Maritimes

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH...............................................................
Are you kidding me fat man(blastor)? 3 airplanes......Wj flys 3 airplanes an hour into some of those cities.
The National Bank...aren't they the wizards that floated Jetsgo?
Don't get me wrong, I wish Sunwing all the best. Please come in, I say, the inmates are running the asylum. It's Blastor's lame attempt at slagging WJ that amuses me.
Blastor...do you not have a life? Any sort of life at all, even a fantasy one with pretend girlfriends?

Good thing I'm going to Cuba, I'm all out of Rum.

Sunwing won't dent WJ that much at all with 3 800's... CanJet might get a little pissed with their smaller 500's though.

CanJet has nothing to be worried about I don't think, not from Sunwing anyway.

They're flying a limited schedule, CanJet has its customers.

Personally I think CanJet is suffering greatly because of the following reasons:

They're throwing all their eggs into the charter market while not maintaining the domestic operations, because of this it is hurting their load factors immensely.

WestJet on the other half is operating Charters while maintaining their domestic route network, that's how you operate charter flights.

CanJet is hurting, and the rumour is this:

No Vancouver this year,
No More Calgary after September.
Moncton, dropping 7 flights a week (WestJet just added 7)

CanJet to scrap Toronto-Calgary service
CanJet Airlines plans to end its Toronto-Calgary service in September, just 16 months after launching the route. CanJet is still allowing passengers to book flights for travel until Sept. 11, but the western route will then be scrapped until further notice.

The Halifax-based airline, privately owned by Ken Rowe's IMP Group International Inc., started its push into Western Canada in mid-2005. However, the carrier cancelled its Toronto-Vancouver service last November. After the Toronto-Calgary route is scrubbed, that will reduce the number of scheduled destinations in CanJet's network to 13 cities -- none in the West. CanJet couldn't be reached for comment yesterday about a possible relaunch next spring of flights to Vancouver and Calgary.

Sunwing is also basing 1 or more of those airplanes in Europe for the summer I believe.

I think it is 2 planes in Europe and 1 in Canada... Possibly a second one on the domestic scene summer or fall. I doubt they even register as a blip on the radar...
