Polarized or non-polarized shades for float flying?

Post by 180 »

I'm hoping someone in the know can clarify this for me. :?

As a float driver, what are the advantages and disadvantages of polarized and non-polarized sunglasses?

Sunglasses

Post by GIMD »

Be careful with polarized sunglasses. I had a pair and found that I could not see some of the intruments in the cockpit porperly. The worst was on screens like GPS, moving maps, etc. Evnetually, I got rid of them and wnet back to my standard sunglasses.

As far as I know, the polarized lenses only cause a real problem with heated windsheilds...something about double polarization making stuff disappear...speaking of which, I seem to have lost my beer....oh there it is...nope...it's gone...that one was empty......

Google answered my second question.

How can I tell if my sunglass lens is polarized?

The easiest way to check the polarization of a lens is by holding the lens you are inquiring about over the top of a lens that you know is polarized. A liquid crystal display (LCD) or digital watch is polarized. Hold the lens over the watch on a horizontal plane and rotate it. If the lens is polarized, you will notice the watch display appears darker as you rotate the lens above it. If the lens is not polarized, there will be no visual difference as you view the watch through the lens.

shades

I had dark vertical bars with polarized shades in a king air 200 (heated windshield) but no problems with them flying the twin otter on floats. Polarized lenses certainly help you see deeper into the water they are good for finding where the fish are when you are holding for a few hours somewhere.....

I don't (or haven't ) flown floats, but I love my serengeti photogromatic lens. in the soup or hazy days it really cuts down the glare and improves visibility a good 1/2 mile in some cases. Even When it's down to mins I always wear em.

Cheers.
