The Zen of Ping Pong and the World Economy

Post by Shtinky »

Not too long ago I picked up at the local library Donald Trump's CD on a book "How To Get Rich". Not that I'll ever get rich being a flight instructor but I was ready to discover new ways of thinking and see what makes other successful people tick.

One of the things that really impressed me was a story that Trump recounted. A few years ago he met a remarkable young woman who was a professional stock market trader. She was very successful, but what made her so interesting was the system that she used in order to stay ahead of the curve.

She told Trump that as a child she would could hear her two brothers play ping pong in another room for hours on end. In time she could tell how the paddle was positioned or how fast the ball was hit. She 'knew' a split second before where the ball would end up on the table and how the opponent would react. In this manner her intuition was built and took on an uncanny turn.

In business when it was time to for her to decide where to put her money she would think quietly and use the same principles of that ping pong ball. She had an ability to 'hear' what the markets were doing and know the 'sound' of the outcome in the future.

In much the same way all of us have been hearing some very alarming news during the last few months. We dont have to purposely seek this information but is there as constant noise in the background. Some of the 'sounds' out there are:

1. On-going struggle against terrorism
2. Reports of another challenging hurricane season this year
3. America working with an insane debt and trade deficit
4. American dollar losing value
5. Oil supply running flat but demand increasing: PeakOil imminent
6. Oil prices becoming increasingly uncomfortable
7. Nuclear standoff between the West and Iran
8. Global warming going from theory to fact

I'm sure there's a lot more to add to this list. With all these 'sounds' we might be able to tell what the future holds and stay clear of danger. Our North American economy is impressive to look at but is a mere house of cards. I feel that we all have the ability to see that danger is looming.

I feel we should realize that our way of life is not sustainable. At present we consume 25% of the world's energy. This will not go on forever. We should also reject the ideas of continuous economic growth and violent consumerism. We should draw closer to our families, friends and community. We should re-arrange our priorities to reflect what's truly important to our 'souls'. This will help us to weather the coming economic storm when oil will not be as available as it is today. :D
