NEWARK, New Jersey (AP) -- Five airline passengers speaking in foreign languages and carrying "aircraft flight materials" were briefly detained Saturday until authorities determined they were simply returning to their home countries after attending a U.S. helicopter training school.

Fellow passengers on American Airlines Flight 1874, which had departed from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, became suspicious of the men, said Steven Siegel, a spokesman for the FBI's Newark office.

A federal marshal on the plane notified authorities at Newark Liberty International Airport about the men's behavior.

The men -- identified only as four Angolan military personnel and an Israeli -- had attended helicopter training school in Texas, Siegel said.

Police officers from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, took the men into custody soon after the plane landed around 3:20 p.m., said a Port Authority spokesman.

After being questioned by authorities, the men were released around 6 p.m., Siegel said.

The plane was carrying 121 passengers and five crew members. All other passengers had been released.

how frustrating would that be.. that we really still think the enemy is within the gates??!!! try standing on the perimeter of the airport with a big bang strapped to his ( i guess maybe her now) chest. One day i got through with all of my flight stuff including a HAMMER!!! then the next flight i had to take my bloody shoes off and unpack my whole bloody bag...(same airport, BTW) Maybe i have a potentially criminal mind, but there are so many more ways to knock down the West than to take over a few more aircraft....
to all Rampies out there, do you guys and gals get screened everytime you head on to the ramp?

I've flown with my parachute as a carry-on about four times. I made one lady's eyes get big once going through security at Pearson, but aside from that, it's been noneventful.

NVG counterweights (approx 3"x6" hunk of lead for back of helmet covered in velcro) will set off an alarm or two when it's in your carry on.....not to mention the look on the security guards faces when trying to explain it....

My favourite was trying to take my maglight flashlight away from me because it could be used as a "lethal weapon". It's awful hard to do a walkaround on a 727 at night without one. Guess they didn't clue in even though I had my uniform on complete with red pass.

There's also the policy on taking nail clippers from folks at security.... I'm sure the 9-11 terrorists were most concerned about how their cuticles were trimmed. Cripes!

Confiscating a "lethal weapon" from a pilot -- Ha ha. Hillarious, especially if they're the ones flying the goddamn airplane...

My favorite comes from a guy who is a mechinic at the airport and thus is permitted to carry tools with him, including knifes etc.

He still has to go through security, and places his items on the x-ray machine. After his tool box of utility knives, hammers etc. are scanned he pasees his lunch box through and they confiscate his fork! He asked if he could just put it in the toolbox and they said no!

My Uncle gave me a quart jar of AN fasteners (nuts and bolts) i stupidly placed in carry on, security tried to take it from me. I produced my ATPL and asked them if they really thought it possible to fix an aircraft while in flight! They took me aside and I had to explain to a guy who barely had command of English what their intended purpose was. In the end he let me take them.

My question is, what do they do with all the loot they confiscate?

We have that "non passenger screening" in YFB and the best story I heard on that topic was the AN pilot who, upon realising he was going to be screened, hands his leatherman to a passenger and says "hold this for me, I'll get it from you on the other side"

I think they (security) have forgotten that the whole reason that they are there is because we're there!!!!

I once flew into Traverse City. We parked a couple hundred meters from a nice little biz jet. It just happened to belong to the President of the United States. There was no security at all. I could have kicked it an no one would have stopped me. The FBO that we went to (a short jog from the VIP transport) had no locks, and no one working there challenged anyone entering. Hell, for about 30 min, no one who worked there was in the building! Now that's security.

Interesting point.

Pre 9/11 I didn't like many Arabs. Just a few, because most had given me "The Look"- you know the one, the "You're a piece of shit, and I'm so great." look. Some had more or less even said it to my face.

Pre 9/11, I thought Arabs only blew up Israelis.

Something to think about anyways...
