YYC ATIS
Moderators: sky's the limit, sepia, Sulako, North Shore
I don't know what they do for theirs, but there are certain things that we're required to put in it, even if we know you guys don't care about a bunch of it, like RSCs in most cases. For FSS, one directive in our MANOPs says to keep messages brief and concise. The next one lists 16 items that have to be in it if they're present. New NOTAMs, RSCs, CRFIs and bird activity, all together, are one item.
Well at least say the ATIS letter in the middle so we can skip the "high intensity converging runways" and "migratory birds in the area" crap! I always seem to tune in just after the winds..
Ack.. it is almost painful to have to listen to it drone on and on just to get the ident letter!

This is funny, because I was in Ottawa a few years ago listening to pilots calling the tower, where the pilot responded to the tower with the ATIS phonetic letter but didn't listen to the whole sequence "It's far too long". I myself can only get the french language ATIS and only while travelling on the 417 while visiting the city. It does seem to drag on, but it's not horribly long.
I also know that North Bay (YYB) the ATIS starts and ends with the exact same phraseology from their personel. Compliments!

FSS wannabe, just curious about stuff, that's all
That doesn't necessarily help the controller, at least in cases where a runway change may have recently taken place. Without stating the letter, the controller won't know if you have the current landing info, and it will cause unnecessary transmissions for confirmation.stevewilson wrote:"with the ATIS......"
ATIS message composition:
A. aerodrome name
B. message letter code
C. time of weather observation
D. wind, including gusty conditions
E. visibility
F. present weather (-RA, -SN, etc...)
G. obstructions to vision (BLSN, FG, etc....)
H. sky condition
I. temperature
J. dew point
K. altimeter setting
L. SIGMET, AIRMET and PIREP that indicate severe weather conditions in the vicinity of the aerodrome
M. other weather information of assistance
N. preferred / active runway
O. aerodrome conditions (NOTAM, RSC/CRFI, bird activity) that may affect the arrival or departure of aircraft
P. instuction to acknowledge receipt of the broadcast on initial contact with the unit
P is skipped more often than you would think.
Rapidly changing conditions would obviously add to the delay of entering a new ATIS too.

If riding in a plane is FLYING. Then Riding in a boat is SWIMMING!
The whole point to the ATIS is to give out information on a separate frequency. Who cares how long it is? 5 seconds or five minutes what difference does it make? Once it is over it starts all over again so it's not like they will save air time by making it shorter. It's the only thing on that frequency.

So we should just leave out information we're required to give according to all our manuals, and you're fine with that?NAYA wrote:I'm not worried about wasting airtime. I am worried about wasting my time.
Your waiver relieving NAVCANADA of responsibility to give you that info is in the mail! Make sure you initial the section that says "Being of sound mind and body, after careful consideration I have decided my time is too valuable to have to listen to any information on aerodrome conditions or hazards in the vicinity of Calgary Airport". You may have to sign a waiver for every airport you fly into, though. That may take up a bit of your valuable time.
I like the ATIS is Naples Italy...
Tune it and there is nothing there.. You have to call them with your ident and someone reads it.
A little confusing the first time though
I know we have discussed it but I still thing RSC's should be moved to a secondary atis freq where they have them (yyz). The primary atis could then just state "Contaminated runways. RSC's available on secondary atis".
