I read somewhere that there's over 2,000 homeless now in the downtown east side. It's a pretty significant number.

that's because ralph gave 'em all a bus ticket to our more sympathetic welfare system! (kidding...about the first part). hey if you were homeless in canada, where's the best place to be? the only place that doesn't really get any snow! and that photo was from a couple of years ago when the homeless were camped out protesting a city decision..or lack there of. that area is really starting to get cleaned up now with new construction.

as to answer your question, none of the hotels are "cheap". they are all in the $100 range. you might want to try something a little farther from the airport. there are good hostels downtown...and not in the east side. it's a 30 min ride on the bus from YVR. save you at least $60 per night. depends on your budget, though.

wallypilot you wrote|that's because ralph gave 'em all a bus ticket to our more sympathetic welfare system! (kidding...about the first part).

well I'm afraid it true, Ralph Klein DID give one way bus tickets to his welfare recipients as part of a "relocation allowance" in the mid 80's just before and during expo 86. What an asshole! he also lowered his corporate tax rate to just below BC's to entice head offices to move and alot did.

It's like that old joke about the two hikers who encounter a cougar and one starts taking off his hiker boots and putting on his runners, his buddy says"you can't out run a cougar!" his buddy says I know but I only have to out run YOU~"

Well in the depression of the 80's Raphy pulled alot of fast ones! of course our NDP govt just took it up the flash pipe!

Well, Ralphy thank god for the oil patch or Alberta would be poorer than Newfoundland!

That being said he is, was and problably always will be an elitist ASSHOLE

just my 2cents from a life long non-hippie West coaster!

Try the Steveston Hotel - rates are pretty good - you might be able to catch the bus from there to the airport.

Comfort Inn just past Bridgeport on No.3 Rd. Pretty cheap and reasonably nice. Also has cheap long term parking if you're leaving a car.

I've also stayed at the Radisson on No.3. Not that cheap but very nice.

Both have shuttle service to YVR. They both also give discounts for both airline and non-airline crews (or at least they did for me).

Hey Beentheredonethat thats what you get for voting for a sociatist party. Take from the rich and give to the poor is how that works, and you wonder why VR has more than their share of homeless. Running a province needs to be done knowing that it's business that employs people not government. BC got exactly what it voted for. To bad because BC has the resources to be the wealthiest province in Canada. Way to many Leaf lickers running the show pre Liberal days to make smart choices.
