log book time

Post by InTheGame »

Ok so I got a job but I have a few questions. I already have my ATPL but now am not sure as to how to log the time in my log book and how it is classified as total time. For example....

I have a type rating but am F/O on a 2 crew plane, when I fly a leg it is still loged in the "co-pilot"column or PIC? and lets say that I fly 300 or 400 hours this year does that take me from 2000 hours ( where I am at right now) to 2400? I know co-pilot time only counts as half but is that just for licencing purposes? So when I go to the next job do I say I have 2400 or 2000 plus half of all time loged as F/O = 2200?

Thanks for your help guys and gals in advance :)

As far as I am aware, co-pilot only counts as 1/2 towards your ATPL. So you will indeed have 2400 total time. But why believe me, I don't even have 200 hours yet :p

You possibly can't have an ATPL, which TC site did you write the exam, that's a pure cpl exam question... But anyways..

PIC - Pilot In Command.... Now when you're flying a "leg," you're doing just that, flying the leg, you're not in "command." Where did you get all your time... a 737 is the same thing as a PC-12 or pa31, ops permitting 2 crew ofcourse.... PIC and Co-pilot...

And again, tc exam question, yes 1/2 counts towards the atpl(what other licenses are there?) but it's 1:1 for your "total time."

You must have been an instructor..

PS. to all those to reply with me being a dick, bite me...

If your are designated F/O for the flight, even though you are "pilot flying" you should log it as co-pilot time. I may be wrong on this...

Yeah, co-pilot time only counts as half time towards total time requirements for a higher licence (421.10), but in your logbook it's still counted as full time (TC can do the math... I think)

As a F/O, in your logbook you will log in the copilot column the full flight time being PF or PNF.

I was kinda wondering that too. It also strikes me as odd how someone can get thru all their training and still not know how to fill out a log book.

As an ATPL rated FO, if you fer instance a 5.3 hour trip, you would log 5.3 in the co-pilot Day or Night column. You can't log the time as PIC since your captain has their name in the command block of the journey log and flight time.

Your FO time would have been assessed by Transport as being worth only 50%of its logged value.
Assuming you wish to apply at some point at a large carrier, your logged time is now worth 100%

Thanks for all your help everyone. I like to ask questions here most of the time. A large majority of you guys have been here and are already aware of simple questions and answers like these. So thanks again.

I only ask because sometimes the questions I ask at Transport are answered with a wrong answer or the "answer of the day" or so obscure you can't get a definate yes or no. Thanks again everyone

How did you get your ATPL
Don't laugh. I once had to show an ATPL holder (who was currently employed by a charter outfit) how to dial in a comm freq with a trailing 2 (pull the knob out)

I am not making this up.

It may be fun, but it's really not very nice to shit on the newbies.

Being confused by Transport bafflegab is entirely understandable.

By the way, the answer is in the CARS. There is no need to ask TC.

here's a related question.... Under FAA rules, I have heard of such thing as supervised PIC, which is also somewhere in the CARS. My Canadian logbook does NOT have a P2 or Supervised PIC column, so I haven't kept track, yet, how does this work towards your ATPL hours?
Cheers,

If your company has it in it's ops manual, it permits FOs to sit in the left seat, and act as captain under the supervision of a training captain. Generally it is restricted to legs where no passengers are carried.

The entry for hour goes into the SIC column, but the remarks section, or the empty adjacent single engine column must contain a remark such as PIC U/S per ops man 5.3.1

There are enough posters to explain how much of it may be logged towards the PIC requirement for an ATPL, but the jist of it is that it will count directly hour per hour to the PIC requirement.

More importantly for you as a driver, it gives you 100 hours or so to polish up your act both for the ride, and for your first flight with a new FO.

Thank you for the answer JustCurious, I wasn't too sure about how it went... I have a bit of a mix up, I have the canadian regs, the peruvian regs, the chilean regs and then the FAA regs... they're all a bit mixed up in there by now :)
Cheers,

You know I was trying to be nice, figured I would take the high road and not respond to the ones here that are negative and condescending. I guess its too bad that some of us can only feel good by puting other people down (a trait most bullies mature from by Junior High school) sad very sad.
