What to do and see in Thailand?
Hey guys and gals,
I'm off to Thailand in 5 days for some R&R for 3 weeks and am wondering what are some cool things to see and do other than the obvious. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
rotorhead350

Thailand is a pretty big country, what are you intrested in doing, seeing? What kind of accomadations are you looking at staying at? Are you backing backpacking around? And most important who are you travelling with?
If you think a professional costs a lot, wait until you see what an amateur will cost you
Star Huts at Thong Nai Pan Noi http://www.travelfish.org/accommodation ... 69/2?ord=0 on Koh Pha Ngan. Little out of the way, but after one Full Moon, believe me, you'll appreciate the distance!
Honestly, Thailand was great, but for a real adventure head north to Chiang Kong, and hop on a riverboat for a two-day hell ride down the Mekong to Luang Prabang in Laos. Absolutely one of the most spectacular areas I've ever been to. Also, if you've got the time, get to Siem Reap in Cambodia and check out Angkor. Will absolutely BLOW YOUR MIND!!
Hookers and coke are for white trash in Vegas. Do the world a favor and keep your libido in check around teenagers, regardless of what country you're in.

All my Thialand experience is pre-tsunami, but my favorite beach spot was Ria Lay Beach, near Krabi. I hear it wasn't hit too hard. I also spent quite a bit of time on Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thialand, but the diving is way better in the Andaman Sea. If your into diving and go to the west coast then I highly recomend doing the "Super Day" diving trip, you go to the King Cruiser Wreck, Andaman Reef (the cause of the King Cruiser Wreck), and Shark Point. Some of the best diving I've done. Sea Fan Divers from Ao Nang was really good, but remember that was 6 years ago.
I also really enjoyed a little town in the North East called Chiang Khan. There is a guest house called the Rim Khong Guest House run by a French guy who has been almost everywhere in the world (say hi to Pascal from Mike). One night in the pub there I ended up talking to this American Guy who did some work with Air America during the Vietnam War. Maybe true maybe false, but great stories either way.

One place that I never got to that I really wanted was a town called Pai in the north near Chiang Mai, didn't get to Chiang Mai either.
This is a cool magazine that you could check out for ideas.

If you mean Chiang Khong then yes you can cross into Laos but you need to have your visa arranged beforehand. I passed through Pai but I couldn't get away from that place fast enough. A really interesting and scenic place is Umphang in West Central Thailand south of Mae Sot. It's a long and tough road to get there but you won't be disappointed. It's also close to the Myanmar border so check with police before you go. The military in Myanmar shelled areas near the town a couple of days after I left.

I'm heading over there by myself and am meeting a friend in Bangkok for a few days and then am planning on heading down to Phuket to check out the beaches and stuff. From there who knows where i'll end up. I am interested in seeing the sites as well as experiencing the local culture..........rh350
You should buy yourself a few bottles of Mekong and drink them on the beach, as the only entertainment there, apart from sex, is listening to bloody kakaoke of Elvis and the Bee Gees. Sickening culture to say the least! Left over from the Viet Nam era, when the troops spent more energy fu**ng in Thailand than fighting in the war!
Cheers,
