Flying and Convictions
Can anyone please advise on the following topic. I was convicted of common assault about 6 yrs ago and I would like to know if this would disallow me from teaching Cadets on the Summer program? Replies appreciated.
By all means apply for a pardon as soon as you can.
A buddy of mine had an assult charge as well when he was in his early twenties.... it came to haunt him years later at age 40 when he needed a security clearance for work. He never applied (for a pardon) because of a couple of reasons; one he was intimidated by government paperwork, and two he believed (erroneously) that a charge like that would "go away" after a couple of years like a bad credit rating.
I helped him with the paperwork and the process was surprisingly simple (especially since the federal government handles the paperwork). Once pardoned, there was no problem getting the security clearance.
With regards to teaching Cadets this summer, you might be hooped though. The process took about 8 weeks until he had his pardon in hand.

I would agree with Doc. The air cadet program, which is perscribed by the DND is administered by officers. Typically, these are civillian instructors, volunteer instructors or cadet instructor cadre officers. These individuals are checked by CSIS, DND and the RCMP. Basically, they (DND)is liable and accountabe to the general public for the staff left in charge of cadets. What you describe, would sadly hinder your ablility to instruct cadets.
On another note, are people actually allowed to instruct with pardons?
GOOD LUCK

Apply for a pardon ASAP. Will an assault conviction exclude you from working with cadets; maybe and maybe not. It's a violent crime that falls into the category of "offences against the person," and will certainly submit you to close scrutiny. However, every case is considered for it's own circumstances. Of course, if you will be working for a contracted FTU delivering the flying scholorship program, they may not consider it a worthwhile investment of time to properly investigate your case. The easiest answer for DND is to just say you can't teach or have contact with cadets.
As for a DUI showing on your record, it you were charged and convicted of impaired driving it will show up as a criminal record on CPIC. If you only got a roadside suspension, it will only show up on your provincial driving abstract.

Does that include random public nudity?
