Have just put in the paperwork for a UK JAA ATPL. If you don't have 500 hours Multi Crew on a multicrew aircraft you will have to take the full course.

Otherwise study via distance learning. I used NAC, but if I had to do it again I'd use Bristol or Oxford. More expensive, but better prepared course material.

Things to keep in mind...

JAR Class one medical...must be done at Gatwick...cost 250GBP.
14 exams...55GBP each, plus airfare and hotel for where you're writing.
RTO exam...Done in UK...70GBP
UK CAA Observer for ride 691GBP
Cost of license issue and type rating on license 315GBP

I didn't have to do a TRTO course since I was already typed. Whatever the course cost for a type rating its probably not worth it. Get in hock 20,000GBP, then get paid and treated shite. You'll be better off to get some experience in Canada, get a type rating, then go to the UK.

Worth the move in my reckoning.

Ok some more questions for you!


Can i start studying NOW even if it will be about 6 months before i meet 1500 hours on two-pilot aircraft?

What kind of type rating are they looking for? Do light twins qualify?
I will have more then 500 hours on type but it's a light twin.

So according to Bristol:
you need to pass all 14 ground exams but don't need to attend a formal groundschool course. (So does that mean i still have to go to the UK to write the exams?) You will need to pass a skills test on the aircraft you are rated on. (A skills test means? A flight test? A ground test?)

I just did a little more research and found that on the NAC website for 2 crew aircraft they need to meet the FARS 25 or 23 requirements, which from googleing i found some vague information saying that they need to be 10 seat aircraft (i am guessing that includes the crew?)
Can anyone verify this information with me?

V1, the multi crew 500hrs needs to be cleared with the CAA. Generally if you flying something like a King Air or larger than you're fine, provided your ops manual states a 2 crew operation. If smaller then again I would talk to the CAA. The MCC, multi crew course, is NOT a requirement for the ATPL, however it IS a requirement to operate a 2 crew transport commercial aircraft under JAA. A type rating is not requirement for the frozen ATPL, once you're type rated and have all the requirements then you'll have a full ATPL. I wouldn't bother going out to get a type rating just to satisfy this requirement. 14 exams, a CPL ride, which is the same format as the one you did here, an instrument ride, which I believe has to be done in the issuing country, will get you a frozen ATPL. The grounschool has to be undertaken unless you have an ICAO ATPL, if not you can do a distance course as an approved training outfit has to sign you off to allow you to enter the exams. I hope that helps.
