Incident @ Prince George

Post by Go Guns »

Just got off the phone with somebody out at the office. Sounds like there's been some sort of incident out at YXS. Lots of RCMP, Fire, and Ambulance units at the South end of 01/19.

It was but when I taxied in @ 1300 local the tower was talking about it opening up again. Rumour has it that it was a piston single that lost power and ditched in the trees.

It was a c-185 refuelling in Prince George on a flight from Kelowna to Scoop Lake. The pilot was alive, but in pretty rough shape when they extricated him, he was rushed to the hospital. The accident happened on takeoff on runway 24, the worst runway in YXS to have a problem on.

Pilot injured in plane crash

by FRANK PEEBLES Citizen staff
A plane crashed at the Prince George Airport, Wednesday evening, sending one to hospital. The alarm was sounded just before 5 p.m. that a plane was down on the southwest side of the airport near the east-west runway, in the vicinity of the paintball park.

"(We have) one critically injured patient," was the message from those on-scene to emergency responders.

"We have no fire, it looks like a medical call only with possibly some extrication required," came the next dispatch at 5:13 p.m. to warn the numerous ambulances, fire trucks and RCMP vehicles on their way to the crash site.

The plane, a Cessna 185, had barely completed takeoff before deviating for as yet unknown reasons into a stand of aspen trees.

"The plane was flying from Kelowna through Prince George to Scoop Lake," said Steig Hoeg, manager of the Prince George Airport. "It refueled in Prince George, departed unsuccessfully at 16:55, and the incident is now under investigation."

According to Hoeg, only the pilot was on board.

"The patient has been extricated and is en route to hospital," came the dispatch at 5:29 p.m.

Hoeg confirmed that, "He survived the crash, he has been taken to hospital, but I don't know what his status is."

The pilot's identity is not yet disclosed.
Everybody is saying the aircraft departed runway 24. I don't think many depart 19. If you're allready down at that end, why wouldn't you depart 15? Hopefully the pilot recovers quickly.

Why didn't he depart 15? In case you don't know, a tail dragger especially a 185 always works best into wind. Summer time, southwest flow, but you just go ahead and use a runway with a quartering or cross
wind with a small tail dragger and sooner or latter you to will figure it out.

I would have to guess you don't have much taildragger time.

Depends, really. If people are asking why he didn't do something, or whether he did something else which may have caused the crash, that's one thing. If they're suggesting that the pilot could have done something specific to avoid the accident... @#$! off, you weren't there. People make dumb decisions, or shit happens, or both, and people get hurt or killed. Wondering what caused an accident is one thing, and should (IMO) be encouraged. If pilots, ATC, and others involved in aviation don't question procedures after an accident, it's bound to happen again. Suggesting that the guy is a moron, though, and that you wouldn't crash in similar circumstances is both useless and disrespectful, especially before the facts are out.

Asking or suggesting why something might have happened is good. Just leave comments about the pilots skills and reasoning out of it until there's more information available.

(This is all assuming that the people making comments know what they're talking about. If you don't, of course, just shut the @#$! up, unless you're just asking a question)

....I did not know that. Do any other planes work best into wind? I've been using up a lot of runway lately by going the same direction that the windsock is pointing because I thought it was showing the way to go....
