Ah, the Pickle. it's not so bad really. If you don't already, you'll learn to like Pickerel fishing. man, i ate a lot of pickerel that summer. When i was there a few years ago, there was a great group at North Star aviation who were a fun bunch to hang out with.
But you're right...not much to do. bugs are bad, but you get used to it. Food is fairly expensive, but not like the arctic. there is a liquor store. In general, just bring what you think will need for living in a small isolated town. a canoe would be awesome. fishing rod....not many trout lakes, so probably a spin rod over a fly rod. Playstation, if you're the gamer type....what else....a good attitude. just go and have fun.

Have fun!! Say hi to Bernie, Lynn and 'Remy.
A kayak would be a good alternative to a canoe - there's a little (small) whitewater around. Perhaps a bike, as it's only about a mile out to the airport from the town. Fishin', and gaming - what Wally said...
Be careful driving through Oz (you'll know when you are there) There's a couple of nasty bends in the road that will catch you unaware if you are going too much over the speed limit. Also, there's a lot of pedestrian traffic.
I did two tours in Pickle, and would go again if I had to..

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

So Pickle Lake is great?
No natives breaking into your house? Car?
No negroes panhandling? No Pakistanis ripping you off on bargain basement incense?
No whiteys scamming you for bus fare?
So I should move to Pickle Lake to improve my quality of life?
Lets hear some truth folks!

I'd like to hear the truth of Pickle Lake. Warts, and all. Let's not sugar coat it, folks.
"oh I had a great time there, sure that guy stole my girlfriend's hairspray, but what a view blasting through the mist on first lift.!."
Stuff like that I wanna hear. Truth it up, folks- Pickle style!

there is no Rotten Ronnies in YPL so place to work for you istp.
If you don't like the local talent such as "Big Edna". May I suggest you bring a jar of vasaline and a leather mitt. And as per your request I am serious, I've heard many YPL stories.

Hey bubbles, get me some of those dressed all over chips!
I spent 3 months in pickle, actually had a pretty good time. Get used to drinking, eating crappy wings, and playing lots of video games.
Bring your fishing gear, its one of the few things to do. There were NO single lady's (of any class) up there. Stay away from Edna.
Not sure if paintball is still popular there, but a few of the guys I worked with had guns and we had us a few outings shooting eachother.
You may think im kidding, but over time, going down to Sioux lookout will
actually excite you, thunderbay becomes the big city...and I only spent 3 months....lmao...have fun.

The feet you step on today might be attached to the ass you're kissing tomorrow.

Istp was picking them up at the local High School.... Plenty to go around, but the parents always chase you away with a shotgun, something to do with marrying a dead beat pilot....KAG wrote:I spent 3 months in pickle, actually had a pretty good time. I never lived in YPL.... but I was up north last year. Of all the things I brought, my pellet gun gave me more entertainment than anything by far. I probably put 10000 rounds through it. I got sick of everything else except fishing (spent way too much money on fishing though.... a st. croix rod here, an okuma reel there, a sonar, etc.... all adds up)
Cheers!

Good heavens'.
The way folks write you would think it is the end of the earth.
I have the P Lake T-shirt from many years ago. It is a metropolis now.
Try living on an island in the high arctic - you can't even DRIVE out for a bit of R&R.
You can go there and hate it or you can go there and love it.

Do they still send a taxi to Sioux to pick up pizza?? Pickle was a hell of a lot of fun, fishing, volleyball in the lake with the MNR guys (only a few leaches in the lake), bbq's, canoeing.
Don't forget to bring warm clothes, first time I went was early june. Looked at where it was on the map before leaving, and didn't pack any warm clothes. The 404 I was flying was from texas, so the heater didn't work, no boots nothing and it was snowing pretty damn good when I got there.
It does get warm, and buggy, lots of back flies, and horse flies, and mosquitos.
Have fun!

How many times do I have to tell ya!?!....There is no R&R when you're doing life with no possibility of parole!cougr41 wrote:

spent a year and a half there. When people look back and say what a great time they had there, it's all due to the great people you worked with. It's not because the amazing bar scene, or the hot chicks all over the place. You had a blast because you truly got to know some amazing people well. You suffered through the worst times and came out better for it. Everytime I get together with guys who I did my tour with, all we can talk about is remember the time when..... It's crazy that a lot of the memories sure weren't a whole lot of fun at the time.
bring
fishing rod
snow goose (probably the single most important item to acquire)
arctic weight charhart pants
polar fleece long underwear
a computer
condoms (can't buy them from the northern store)
any type of "fancy" booze that you might like
camera
rent is really cheap. I never paid anywhere near $200/month splitting with my buddies.
