I don't have any personal expeirence with any of those schools but I have visited DFC a few times and it seems like there is a pretty good oppourtunity for part time positions after an instructor rating. I know that they run cadets in the summer and this year are taking on 18 cadets. Best of luck!
Last time they advertised for a IV they stated you start on the desk....Xenophobe wrote:Try Toronto Airways in Buttonville if you want to work with an awesome bunch of people and build time FAST....Trust me, I've been there!
Can you confirm they'll hire you after your rating and will let you fly?
Work desk to get an instructor gig? I understand doing it while you are working on the rating to get to know the company, but didn't you train to teach people how to fly?
If they pay well, that's cool. But if a school pay min wage and can only find dispatch staff by abusing their new instructors that's just not right.
Instructors should instruct, dispatchers should dispatch.... I'll dispatch to help out when our dispatchers are swamped, or when I don't want to wait for my aircraft.

Typical example of people opening their mouths when they don't know wtf they're talking about!
Yes, you work a desk shift, but you are the "Duty Pilot" Assisting the dispatcher. The idea is that if a student goes solo, there is always an instructor there to sign them off for a solo flight. This means that if your student wants to go solo, you as his/her instructor don't have to be there to supervise the flight.
That turns out to be a great idea, and its a great way to learn how the company works, particularly if you are an instructor that is hired from the outside (as was my case). Also, its guaranteed money, so why not?
But maybe this thread is a great way to filter out those lazy people that are offended by work. "ME!? Work the DESK? How dare you!!"
Trust me, TAL has its problems like everywhere else, but I've been gone for a while and I miss the people I worked with everyday.

you will bless your stars that you are able to work the desk when the weather is the shits for a week straight. Unless your school pays a base pay, the desk shifts will be your only wage when the wx craps out, and a bloody good idea to get to know the maintenance sched and have at least an awareness of what is required to keep things rolling. (get some accounting experience etc.. as well.)
Besides, on slow days, the instructor at the desk is usually the one that gets the new student that just walked in out of curiosity. My experience, anyway. good luck!
