What kind of GPS?

Post by Jeromeo »

I just purchased a Lowrance Airmap 1000 aviation GPS. I am super stoked. This thing is awesome!!!! Just wondering what you use and how you like it?? I had a handheld recreational GPS which worked fine but it didn't show airspace cause it wasn't an aviation GPS. Anyways Post away!

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but for most uses, I found the 1000 to be way to big... I personally like the garmin series for their size a little better.. We have our garmin 295's mounted just above our ADI's so it will minimize the scan when flying in the goo.. Both units will give you all the info that you need but the smaller unit will not block your VFR sightlines..

BTW I don't think the 295 is the be all and end all.. There are newer ones that will do a lot more for you.. I just use it cause that's what we've got.. I've used the 195, 196, Trimble 2000, King KLN90, apollo, Magelland, and many others and they are all good, it all boils down to what works for you...

Never used a Lowrance. But when it comes to the Garmins all the -5 ones are crippled. I would take a 196 over a 295 any day.

Any reason for that? What do you mean by crippled

Crippled as in missing all the useful extra functions. I have only played with thw 196, 295, 296, and 396. The extra stuff like w&b, flight logging, etc was totally missing on the 295. The only thing it did was navigate (which admittedly is what it is supposed to do). I couldn't even get a takeoff time out of it.

I looked into the 195 though and it seems that it has these functions. So i guess it's just the 295 that i have a problem with. I just don't find a colour screen more important than useful functions.

Anyone used the Garmin iQue 3600a?

I bought one last year and used it for a bit before my plans changed and I sold it. I think they are slightly cheaper than the conventional ones and pack all the same features plus some more.

I've used one of those - it's good, but the 296 is more robust and waterproof too.

I agree the airmap 1000 from lowrance is big. To go as far as to say it's too big that it blocks your vfr sightlines??? I like it big. It's easy to look at and I don't have to waste more time with my eyes in the cockpit trying to figure out what the damn GPS says. I liked the garmins but they are just way too expensive for what they've got.... My opinion

Yes, happy with mine for six months now, both in the airplane and in the
car. Same display capabilities as the 295/6, plus PalmOS software,
plus more compact size, plus cheaper! Minus water proofing.

Just tried out the lowrance 1000 and it seems like quite a good unit.
