EMERGENCY LANDING SYSTEM - FIXED WING AIRPLANE (Patent App.)

Post by frac »

EMERGENCY LANDING SYSTEM - FIXED WING AIRPLANE

Abstract

The purpose of this invention is to prevent and/or reduce the loss of life during an emergency landing of an airplane away from an airport environment. This is possible by eliminating one of its wings and using the other wing to perform in the same manner as the rotor of a helicopter. Thus, the whole airplane will spin because of its momentum imbalance, and a transferring linear momentum into angular momentum. The airplane will in effect be in a controlled auto-rotation and the altitude and ground approach velocity will be greatly reduced to a near zero speed upon touchdown. The result can be achieved by placing controlled explosive devices coupled with a rocket or jet inside one of the wing structures. The explosives devices and the rocket/jet engine, with the direction of thrust to the front, will cause the wing to separate from the fuselage and provide a very strong lateral impulse or spin on a horizontal plane. This lateral spin with one wing remaining will provide the centrifugal force required to maintain auto-rotation and the remaining wing will provide the control surface to maintain lift necessary to maintain the horizontal attitude of the airplane until it reaches the ground.

Possibly the stupidest idea I have heard... :?

Better to blow both wings off. It will save digging holes later

No wonder it's coming from Thailand.

I really like claims number 5 and 6

5. Any means to slow the descent of the airplane by utilizing retro-rockets or jets under the fuselage. The downward thrust of the retro-jets will soften the landing.

6. The emergency landing system for a fixed wing airplane as in claim 1-5, where the said system is capable of being operated remotely from ground or interceptor airplane.

and the following:

At the predetermined altitude (depending upon types of airplane), a signal from the altimeter will detonate the explosive charges, with the thrust forward 1, causing a controlled separation of the wing, and the thrust needed to cause a very strong force in the rearward direction of this wing. The explosive devices will provide enough to break the wing from the airplane at the fuselage 2. This force will then, make the whole airplane spin on a horizontal plane and in the direction of the missing wing 3.

I always thought for Fixed gear GA aircraft it would be a good idea to mount landing gear with explosive bolts. That way if you needed to to an emergency water landing you can blow off the gear and you dont have to worry about the gear flipping you when they catch the water.

I have seen at least one hang glider failure that resulted in a autorotation to a injury free crash (inverted btw). Therfore it must work on a A380 or 747 don't you think.

Cool! The people at the very front or very back are going for an "E-Ticket" g-force ride!

I'll bet these explosive devices will never malfunction on a perfectly good airplane either :smt075 . Just imagine flying along at FL350 and then having the sensor glitch and separate your wing. Fun.

Cheers,

Funny, I remember thinking about whether an airplane that loses a wing could autorotate to a relatively safe landing a couple years ago. I guess Mr. Phanumphai and I both have too much time on our hands. Maybe I should've patented it. :D

I nominate whoever came up with this idea to do the first test flight. At least he'll come in fairly high in next years darwin awards.

Hmmm...Imagine spinning like a pinwheel at near zero vertical velocity all the way down from 10,000 feet

Would it look something like this?

Ok guys and gals stay calm, the engine has just quit because we ran out of gas. Make sure you seats are upright and your belts are on tight. There is an ELT and first aid kit in the back of the plane. You may here a loud bang as I am going to blow off the left wing for saftey and we will sping like a helicopter to the ground. Any questions? Remember stay calm everything will be ok...

Looks like the Cirrus parrachute system has some stiff compitition from a much simpler, and of course, logical system. I mean, what faster way is there to get an aircraft in an emergency on the ground other than blowing a wing off? While the pilot in the Cirrus is floating around aimlessly like a retard wondering where the breeze will take him, the other pilot will be safely in the ground.........I mean on the ground.

What happens if your emergency is that you lost a wing?
