Is the West a place to get started?
I'm new to this forum and semi new to aviation for that matter, I have a commercial float lic. 300tt, 20 hours multi, and soon to be MIFR rated. Since the economy is booming in the west. Is this the best place to be doing road trips to? A list of companies that hire from the ramp would be appreciated, or any information on the situation in the west for that matter.

Hey COEHILL you must be a southern Ontario guy judging by the name.
Id go to Yellownife or northern alberta. Both places are going nuts.

Anywhere where you can get started is a good place to get started. By that, I mean, leave no stone unturned. There are many places in Northern Alberta that will give you a great start (some good, some bad, a start is a start), it'll all depend on how much B.S you are willing to tolerate. Are you open to living in the far North, like north of Yellowknife?COEHILL wrote:I'm new to this forum and semi new to aviation for that matter, I have a commercial float lic. 300tt, 20 hours multi, and soon to be MIFR rated. Also, what direction would you like to go, and how much float time do you have? That might be a good direction for you right now.
Good luck!

I hate to break it to you, but YZF is not the "far north"desksgo wrote:...Are you open to living in the far North, like north of Yellowknife?

Ya Southern Ontario Kid, I hope that isn't detrimental in getting hired by northern companies. I wouldn't be afraid of moving to the territories, I'm kinda looking for a company where you could transition into IFR flying. I just figured with the economy in the west doing well and the majors hiring there should be job movement in the west.

That is why I said North of Yellowknife, pretty clever ehco-joe wrote:I hate to break it to you, but YZF is not the "far north"desksgo wrote:...Are you open to living in the far North, like north of Yellowknife?

Good luck!but you can almost see it from there.
And COE...Ever consider ramping at places like Wasaya, NAC or Nakina up in Northwestern Ontario? Nakina might be a good shot since you have a float background and want IFR stuff too.
Probably isn't the best time, but make some phone calls to some places like that and you may catch a break. Also be prepared for a road trip.
GOOD LUCK
I did my training in NWO, and i know a few people on the ramp with Wasaya and some in the office at NAC. I just would be worried that if i ever got into the flightline with them i could never advance to the left seat because of a lack of PIC time, also although there are a few there isn't much multi traffic in NWO and i don't know how valuable right seat pc12 time is.

I guess places like Little Red Air Service would be more your deal...also maybe give Northwright in Normal Wells a looksie. You could go from their 206/207 into something more IFR oriented.

With Nac they do have a policy of moving ground guys to right seat pc-12 then left seat pc-12 and same as Wasaya but you start in the Van regardless of pic time so don't be afraid of the ramp, good things can come from it. If I was you do the road trip cause that's the only way they hire up north unless you have some serious time, and if you have a chance Air Tindi in yellowknife has started alot of careers.
Good luck where ever you decide to go.
