Pipeline/Patrol/Survey Flying

Post by TopperHarley »

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone here has done any pipeline/patrol/survey flying in their career.

Are these jobs typical for a new entrant, or do these companies generally seek related experience or an ATPL?

If anyone has any info on this type of flying I would be very appreciative. I tried to do an internet search for a list of companies, but I was not successful in finding much info.

Thanks in advance,

Chris.

The flying club I fly for does about 15-20 hours a week of gas pipeline inspection.

All the pilots are instructors, which is nice b/c its a good chunk of flying that is not reliant on a student coming in the door.

As an entry level instructor, many don't have any related experience and are no-where near having an ATPL.

If you need any info, feel free to PM.

Well there is one company in YXD/YEG who does a great deal of that, they keep three people full time running very busy and another one or two part-time.

First off it is a great deal more work than you people realize and many of the poopheads they bring on fail miserably maybe because they are looking at it as a way to build time (Wrong!), they miss many things on the patrol, violate airspace and other regs. This not only pisses off the oil companies because these mistakes are costly and they have little patients for kids and their excuses (sorry but thats the truth). Lastly, it has taken a few a/c and a couple lives that I know of...................its not a game boys & girls, these companies are expecting professionals who can get the job done, bring the a/c and yourself back safely and they are also looking for more advanced methods of reporting such as detailed e-mail reports along with digital photo's of the patrol.

On the flip sideif you come across someone who has done pipline for a while then you will encounter some of the richest 172 pilots you will ever meet!!
