UBC and training in Van.

Post by flystraightin »

Does UBC have any 4yr BCom with an aviation option? Also, is it common to go to UBC and train at ZBB? Seems kind of far...is there any school at YVR...south maybe?

Thanks

I can't answer your question but can offer some advice...

I graduated from UBC and did my flight training in Langley. I was living in Burnaby at the time so had to commute for both.

I always enjoyed the drive time to think about the previous lessons or about papers to be written etc. (back then(1977), there were no cell phones, Blackberrys, MP3 players etc. for distractions. ZBB was not a designated airport and in fact was abandoned)...enough history...

I would seriously consider what you want to do in aviation. If you only want to drive, get your major in something that you would like to do as a backup career. You will pick up everything you need to fly along the way. An aviation diploma is only good in Aviation.
UBC is a great school. Make the most of it!

PS. I fly and never did use my backup education... It was always there in my back pocket though!

I don’t think UBC has any aviation related programs (except aeronautical engineering.) But really I wouldn’t give much weight to an “aviation” degree/diploma. Do “REAL” UBC in a program you like; ZBB is a great place to train as is YNJ. I did exactly what your talking about except at UVIC and flying at YYJ. BCom is a nice idea, but it really depends on what you like; if your just doing a BCom for the sake of doing a BCom then you may want to reevaluate things. I started towards a BCom but found that the other Arts programs were far more intellectually stimulating. You will likely grow more as a person in an arts program than a BCom; And really aviation is such a screwy business anyway anything you learn in a Bcom or MBA will likely do more harm than good if applied in aviation.

My $1.50

thanks for the quick responses everyone.

Looks like I may be staying in Victoria for university then...considering I live about 500m. from the school! lol I already work at YYJ and fly at Juan Air, but I've always wanted to do my schooling away from home, although staying here would save me quite a bit of money. Looks like its a trade-off.

Sorry for thinking out loud...its almost time for college applications, so Im trying to get everything organized.

Thanks again

fsi.

ps: and niss- thanks, but no thanks. :)

If you're going to go to a full-blown university DO NOT do anything related to aviation; almost any degree is viewed favourably by HR departments, and you may as well get a degree in something that can serve as a backup career in the event you lose your medical. Also do your degree in something that truely interests you. To directly answer your question, UBC has no aviation-related degrees (commerce or otherwise) that I know of. When going to UBC, ZBB is a great place to train at provided you have a car, otherwise it's a royal pain to get to. I can't speak for YNJ. There is no training provided at YVR except for one tiny outfit that only does float ratings and their version of a 50hr bush course (landing fees killed all other training more than a decade ago).

To offer you advice, I totally understand the desire to move away from home. Look at your situation with a critical eye - if you can afford to move out do it; if you think money will be tight stay put and throw those dollars into your aviation training. Another thing to seriously consider is whether you can flight train and attend university simultaneously. University is a FAR greater workload than highschool, so unless you take a reduced couse load or a very easy program it will be very difficult to make time for flight training (compound this with shitty wx in the winter and it makes it nearly impossible). Consider working part-time in aviation throughout the year and saving your dollars to train super-intensively come summertime (you will now have 4 months break instead of two!). I suspect you will enjoy your flight training more this way, and your university experience more too! Considering how much you're paying for each, you might as well enjoy them instead of being miserable and overworked.

P.S. UBC does not have an aeronautical engineering department/degree. The closest thing they have is a Mech Eng. degree with a thermofluids option.

P.P.S. If your just applying now, apply all over the place in case you get turned down somewhere. It's good that you're thinking about this in advance but keep your options open until you're forced to decide.

P.P.P.S. For reference, I'm just entering my fourth year of an engineering degree at UBC, I hope to have my CPL by the end of august, and I've worked at YVR part-time since the summer after first year. I've done school in the winters, and flying in the summers, and worked year-round. By this time next year I'll be in a great position career-wise and I've had loads of fun in the past four years. So yeah, whatever you chose just giv'r.

thanks dude...that sounds exactly like what im going to do. I want to fly, but if I wasn't flying I'd want to start some sort of small sports store, I want to go into BCom anyways.

I've heard training and college don't mix well. I plan on taking a full 4 or 5 courses (or how many it is), so I think I'll be training in the summer only, and maybe a few flights in the winter to stay current.

I'm going to need a loan, so I'm leaning on staying in Victoria. I already work for Horizon here at YYJ, so theres my job. Looks like Im set.

Thanks again
