I know some dispatchers, and depending on the company, you need to know a lot. It is a stressful job, and if you don't have the stuff, you'll find out quickly.
If your IFR knowledge isn't up to par, you will struggle. If you don't like doing everybody else's job, you'll fall behind. If you get behind the 8-ball, you will buckle. If you fall behind, you must pick yourself up and keep going. If you can't multitask, you'll be overwhelmed.
If you show initiative, patience, and perserverence, your peers will rally by your side.
...so in a nutshell, know all of your IFR, MET, RAC section, and learn some of the CARS 703, 704, 705.

Know something about the airplanes the company operates.
Know where to company operates, if they fly to Goose Bay, you better know where it is and what the code is.
The most important thing on every operators mind right now is fuel cost.. Think of ways to keep fuel costs as low as possible. This applies to everyone now, not just the heavies!
If you learn nothing else, KNOW THE CAP GEN.

The CAP GEN yeah, mostly how to aplly calculation for alternate wxx and the specification of the ops of the company i.e: a commuter does not operate like an international, the geography of the area where the company operate is an important thing to. i.e.: flying over the rockies or in the north is not like flying around cywg or cyyz....
happy Canada day everyone
