Challenging job, great money, great benefits, great security, marginal schedule/lifestyle at times, although prob no change if you're used to medevac or charter flying.Vector2ILS wrote:any suggestions / thoughts?
Success rate during training is generally quite low, especially for IFR. Not to say don't do it, but be well aware of the "risk" going in -- that you could spend up to 24 months in training, only some of it paid, and if it doesn't work out, you're left with a partially developed skill set that is totally non-transferable to any other job.
Do your research, talk to people, visit a tower and a centre before you make your decision. If you decide to go for it, be prepared to work your ass off during training like nothing you've experienced before. University/college pales in comparison to the crushing workload and pressure IMHO.

Homework done while waiting for a test date might make the test irrelevant, if you decide it's not for you. Doesn't hurt to start digging now.cyyz wrote:Go for the testing, don't waste time on "homework," if you fail the test, don't waste anymore time "pondering" on the move....Vector2ILS wrote:Hey, thanks for the info. Still-in-yxl, forgot to mention something else. You may know this if you've been around this board for a while... But cyyz is an expert on all things related to ATC, be it training, staffing, sequencing, etc, etc, etc.greykin wrote:Homework done while waiting for a test date might make the test irrelevant, if you decide it's not for you. Before his life as a pilot, he was obviously a super-controller, gaining incredible knowledge that allows him to make sweeping statements related to ATC/ANS that are always perfectly valid.
Most of what I know about controlling, I learned from him.

hahahahahahaaha.... that is the funniest shit I've read in well since I started coming to this forum and a truer word has not been spoken. I wondered where CYYZ's bitterness towards ATS came from, now I think I finally understand. He planned his whole life around becoming a controller but keeps failing the entrance exam. Now he's stuck with 5 ex-wives, a drinking problem, a huge mortgage, 6 kids and no way to support his lifestlye as a captain of a C172. CYYZ, try studying for the exam despite what you may think, it might just help!!greykin wrote:Still-in-yxl, forgot to mention something else. We have no effective screening methods to make sure pilots are sane.
