A major oil company is suspending its use of North Wright Airlines following a fatal airplane crash in the Northwest Territories.
Last Wednesday, a Cessna 337 plane owned by the family-run airline crashed into a mountain 50 kilometres east of Fort Good Hope, a community in the north central region of the Territory.
All six people on board were killed.
Now, Imperial Oil has put its contract with the airline on hold pending an investigation into the accident.
"Any incident that raises concern about the safety of our people, we take that very seriously," said Imperial spokesman Paul Rolheiser.
Wednesday’s crash marked the airline’s first fatal accident.
In the last 20 years, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada has investigated 10 accidents involving North Wright Airlines. TSBC spokesman John Lee said the safety issues in question were relatively minor.
Lee says it could be six months to two years before the cause of last week’s crash is known.
